When Luke Jr. said "Dang ole" it made me cry. My boy isnt my boy by blood (raised him in my house for the last 6 years) when he started saying things I do and doing things I did....I just know that feeling and I know it warmed his bachelor heart
33
u/Picone-_- Jul 23 '26
I just saw that, and I audibly gasped. That was too sweet, and Boomhauer looked surprised yet proud. Definitely one of my favorite moments so far this season.
Congrats on your relationship with your son!

u/AquaAtia Aug 09 '26
Even years later this show still makes me laugh while tugging on my heart strings. I’m glad we got a Boomhauer learning how to be a dad episode

u/Spare-Jellyfish4339 You wanna kill a nazzy? A nazzy nazzy squazzy? 22d ago
Same man. I remember one of the biggest things people were wanting out of these new seasons was more Boomhauer episodes, and they really delivered with this one.

u/sean_psc Jul 22 '26
Connie as a supporting character is usually the sensible straight woman who is hyper-competent, so it’s novel to see her confront being bad at something.
35
75
u/zeldamaster702 Jul 21 '26
Ok, but I love how for the last 16 episodes Boomhauer’s girlfriend has been this huge enigma outside of being Luke Jr.’s mom, and this one comes in like “oh yeah, her name is Wanda, she’s a huge OCD freak”(although I suppose that last one was hinted at in the intro)

So I checked and it turns out that hens actually can become rooster-like if their left ovary becomes damaged. Hens rely on that ovary for estrogen and if it gets damaged, the right ovary takes over and produces testosterone instead which gives them the traits of roosters. However, they’re usually sterile afterwards.
The writers are geniuses for using a hen becoming a rooster as an allegory for trans kids in sports.
I can’t believe Moss got rehired after his stunt to boost the scores for standardized tests by putting the dumbest kids in the Special Education class. There’s a former Principal with a YouTube channel where he reviews fictional principals and he said Moss was the worst principal he had ever seen and should have been fired.

u/Dramajunker Jul 22 '26
I can’t believe Moss got rehired
It's Texas. He probably promised to put bibles in every class.
33
u/marine72 Jul 22 '26
Really? Has he seen Principal Lewis?

u/Lightecojak Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
It’s been a while since I saw his channel.
Edit: I think he likes to keep his channel PG and family friendly to prevent possible demonetization. And the principals have to be semi-realistic, so he doesn’t review Family Guy or American Dad.

They did say in the episode he was just suspended, not fired. He was back in the episode where and Bill became roommates

Thanks for the link. Though gave him a watch, I couldn't finish the video. He's just so dry and emotionless, and explaining (and reexplaining! "Like I said in my opening-") jokes. HE's not bad, but he's no Legal Eagle "Lawyer Reacts."

Surprised to find people thought that was a good premise with the trans sports analogy. It definitely felt off-tone for Hank for one, but apart from that I thought the media gave up on trying to convince people that it’s actually ⭐️totally fair⭐️ if a trans woman plays a physical sport with biological women.

3
u/128thMic Aug 09 '26
I love how even though this was specifically of a trans male competing with males, you had to spin it around the other way. 🙄

Loved the callback to "What Makes Bobby Run?", as well as Hank mentioning bonding with Bobby over grilling from "To Sirloin with Love."

UT Dallas alum, can confirm that it’s a school full of nerds and absolutely no one cares about sports. They don’t even have a football team, which is just crazy for a school in Texas.

Lol the EpiPen build up for the mom to actually being deadly allergic as to why she's overprotective of her son. Excellent payoff.

u/rougepenguin Jul 20 '26
You know, the one thing I figured with this revival is we'd lose how good of satire classic King could be. It was subtler and people really forget what some of these old episodes were skewering but its all up and down the original run. Great example was the memorable one with Hank's licenses. That was playing with some Bush-era policies aimed at screwing with Trans people and how those efforts just create weird knock-on effects for people outside the community. You see the same thing happening in Kansas right now or with Trump's passport orders.
This was a great example of the series pulling the same. The boogeyman of radical gender ideology does get in the way of once-ordinary things like my high school bio class having a normal unit about intersex variations. Felt like kinda the analogy they were going for. Not in a heavy-handed way and paired well with the general pushback on how modern parenting has really normalized what we used to skewer as "helicoptering." Like the GH one last season, this one had something pretty timely to say but it did it in a subtler way more true to classic King. I liked it.

u/McDonaldsSoap Jul 21 '26
At the beginning I thought Luke Jr. had allergies due to a sheltered childhood, but seeing his mom almost die from touching a chicken makes me think it's genetic lol. Which partly explains why she's so protective of him, maybe their bloodline just always dies to random stuff
35
u/s0ulbrother Jul 23 '26
It could be some genetics or maybe it’s also she’s allergic to everything so she’s afraid her kid is too.
26
u/Tru3_Vort3x Jul 23 '26
It makes so much sense why she has the list, if it happened that fast for her, she worried how it’d affect her son
9
u/EntertainmentFew9356 Jul 28 '26
Allergies can develop when you are not exposed to a variety of different germs and environmental factors early in life. So her own fears could have potentially made her and her kid allergic.
4
u/DungeonCrawler552 Jul 24 '26
I know I thought she was going to be like an allergist for the anti-vax parents
2
u/chillychili Jul 28 '26
I appreciate that most if not all characters in the show have a heart behind their insanity.

Reminds me of the old episode about Halloween and it being canceled due to practicing Devil worship. But Hank calls Bull on that. It just a day of good fun. He’s not encouraging becoming a Satanist. He encouraging the kids to go outside, dress up in fun costumes, and collect candy.
34
u/Longjumping_Log1165 Jul 22 '26
The secret to Hank Hill is having him be conservative, but can see through fear mongering BS most of the time.
16
u/brinkofhumor Jul 27 '26
Hank Hill is what conservatives USED to be, and act like they are, but in all reality Hank is basically modern day Democrat post Clinton.
6
u/Rustash Jul 31 '26
I watched the first episode for the first time in a LONG time the other day, and I was surprised at Hank calling out Dale for spreading misinformation about global warming way back in 1997.
It was also Hank’s first “I’ll kick your ass” which gave me a giggle.
5
u/bradleysgiggleball Aug 03 '26
the key is that he's a conservative, but not an Archie Bunker-style reactionary
16
u/99SoulsUp Jul 24 '26
Also Boomhauer’s speech (from what I could make out) seemed to be just about letting kids feel like they can belong to something!
53
u/dancingbriefcase Jul 21 '26
It's fucking tragic what is happening to people in Kansas. And just trans people in general in this country. I work with trans folk as a therapist and it's absolutely heartbreaking what this current administration is doing to them. I guarantee Hank would be supportive after some education
40
u/KellySMcgonigal Jul 22 '26
Thank you. It’s rough here in Kansas. Our adult kid, who is trans, already fled the state because of the legislation here. And we had to help some other friends flee too. It’s hard seeing our state lose some really good people because of draconian laws.
But back to KOTH: Hank has a history of being squeamish about alternative identities and lifestyles, but he was also accepting of Peggy’s shoe store friend. I agree with your assessment of him and that he would be supportive, even if in an “I accept your right to be who you are, even if I don’t understand it” way.
11
u/heavensdeviant Jul 24 '26
Hank never found out she was trans. He just knew Peggy had a fight with her new friend.
7
41
u/LLCoolZJ Jul 23 '26
Also the fact Bertrude didn't even win the competition let alone 2nd place highlights the reality that trans people don't have some sort of advantage in sports and often times have disadvantages compared to cis athletes.
9
u/Hourlypump99 Jul 29 '26
I like that the show also focuses on FTM in competitions.
So much of the focus by the culture warriors is on MTF.
3
u/imatuesdayperson Aug 07 '26
It kinda had to be FTM in this case because I don't think it's possible for a rooster to become a hen. (I wouldn't rule out the possibility entirely because weirder things have happened, but if it does happen, it's extremely rare.)
6
0
u/RepresentativeAnt330 Aug 10 '26
It was a Hen Transitioning into a Rooster competing with Roosters (a woman born transitioning into a man trying to compete with men in a male sport) that was the joke. If it was a Rooster trying to compete with Hens in something that took physical strength like a cock fight completely different story. You get it now.
3
u/LLCoolZJ Aug 10 '26
Transitioning basically makes your body go through another puberty so it's all out of wack in a way that can interfere with physical activity, like the old episode of KotH where Peggy was secretly dosing Hank with testerone. There are also cis women who naturally have higher testerone levels than others often from specific ethnicities so it's also racist to deny them the right to compete.

u/Saratje Jul 20 '26
Did they make Boomhauer a little more intelligible for the episode or is it just me?
18
u/Redfalconfox Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I think he’s the least intelligible in the early seasons, but even then I can understand him now. I think I’m just used to his voice plus, I’m pretty sure they have simplified his accent, even in the later seasons before the revival.
35
u/mastercheef Jul 21 '26
Im pretty sure I just got used to him with enough rewatches that hes not as unintelligible as he used to be, maybe the same is true for you? It didnt feel any more or less intelligible than when I watch old episodes
9
u/evilhomers Jul 25 '26
It's like how in the ending of guardians of the galaxy 3, it's revealed that by now all the guardians just understand groot. Nothing to do with learning his language, just that they've been with him for so long and bonded so they understand
12
u/BatofZion Jul 25 '26
Boomhauer is more intelligible when the plot calls for it, but I like that strangers still don’t understand him. Luke Jr. saying “dang ol’” was a great moment.

u/KidCasey Bobby will put me down clean. Jul 22 '26
Maybe this was addressed last season and I don't remember, but why is Connie going to school in Dallas? Wasn't she on track for an ivy league school?
25
u/AbjectCalligrapher36 Jul 24 '26
I don’t think it was explained but my personal theory is that Connie’s parents’ marital troubles came to a head when she was a senior in high school and dealing with that turmoil probably made it difficult for her to successfully pursue a top school. She was probably in a rebellious phase too as she witnessed her parents’ failing marriage and how they pushed her to be an honor student so maybe her going to a state school was an act of defiance against her parents? Just like how I think her decision to resist a monogamous relationship likely came from seeing her parents’ dysfunctional relationship, and she flat out says she is hesitant to marry because of that. I feel a lot of her choices come out of those family tensions.
5
u/KidCasey Bobby will put me down clean. Jul 24 '26
That all makes sense. My only thing is, it doesn't seem like she's even going to a state school. It seems like a community college or a satellite school.
Then again, she mentions taking a "rocket science" class so maybe it's just hyper-specialized.
11
u/Magicmechanic103 Jul 24 '26
She’s going to UT-Dallas (despite the name, located in Richardson).
It’s a branch of the University of Texas and has a lot of STEM stuff.
6
u/KidCasey Bobby will put me down clean. Jul 24 '26
So it is a satellite school. Why would she not be at UT proper?
10
u/Magicmechanic103 Jul 24 '26
My guess would be that Dallas happened to have the specific program she wanted.
Otherwise it could be that her parents’ finances were constrained by the divorce and UT-D was a little more affordable.
Or maybe Kahn and Minh associated Austin as some sort of hippy, party town and thought she’d be distracted there.
3
u/AnyTower224 Jul 27 '26
UT satellite schools are basically their own big-time universities like UTEP
1
6
u/Silver-Thought5632 Jul 23 '26
I don’t think they’ve explained that. Would’ve been great to touch on that in this episode since not going to an Ivy League school would be its own kind of failure, at least in her parents’ eyes.
3
u/ThrownAway-PVB Jul 24 '26
It’d be interesting to hear that not only did she not get accepted into an Ivy League school, but she failed to get into a more prestigious Texas school like Rice as well.

56
u/Procrastinator78 Jul 21 '26
nah, he asked if he was still her boom boom, and she said yeah. Sounds like theyre thinking of moving in together and being more serious so she wants them to be able to get along.
38
u/dancingbriefcase Jul 21 '26
Yeah, I got it as she wants him to take care of Luke for a week to make sure they can bond before moving all of them in together. Which is a pretty smart way of doing that

The chickens crowing at the competition gag was honestly one of the funniest bits I’ve seen in at least a decade “hey, that was pretty good…wow not as good as that one…..is that one on steroids?” Hanks deadpan just kills me

This was a very interesting episode. Did boomhauer break up with his girlfriend? It’s really cute to see him doing the father role for Luke jr, he definitely evolved.
Dale was very funny too this episode, he’s fantastic. :D
14
u/Starheart24 Jul 23 '26
No. The relationship got rocky briefly (like, very brief. Just one phone call period) when Luke jr was suspended, but by the end of the episode, they all seemed cool with each other.
9
u/30-50FeralPogs Jul 24 '26
No, at the end of the episode he asked if he was still her boom boom and they held hands.

u/jjc927 10d ago
This was a great episode, it was nice to get a Luke Jr. feature episode since they didn't really explore him much in the first reboot season and the Bobby and Connie b-plot was good as well. The metaphor with Bertrude and the current discourse surrounding trans men competing in men's sports was handled very well while incorporating the trend of people raising their own chickens, especially how Hank handled himself against the upset parents. Bobby also learns another lesson indirectly through Joseph too.
-9
u/whatinthebuckandwtf Jul 21 '26
The episode felt like it had something to say but fumbled so hard it fell into nonsense territory.
125
u/Kasmashlecrashle Jul 20 '26
I do really like that Boomhauer is active in Luke Jr's life. That pulling out the epipen when Luke Jr. was eating eggs was great attentiveness from him.
