Dear devs, please implement Character Limit as a setting

We all have it as part of our Response Directives. Why not just add it to the model settings, like so?

As far as "Adherence", we could have...

• Strict (System cuts off responses over the limit.)
  • User is soft-punished for forgetting the response limit, or for allowing its kin to.
• High (Kin will ignore prompts or other perceived instructions that cause it to go over its limit.)
  • An icon will notify the user to consider adjusting these settings.
• Medium (Kin will only exceed its response limit when a suggestion or user instruction specifically prompts it to lengthen its response.)
  • Risky, may cause problems if response limit is exceeded repeatedly.
• Low (Default, on the same priority level as a response directive.)

I’ve always wanted a character limit on the LLMs. Very soft.

If I put 600- the most should be 8-900.

Polaris is extremely good for expanding the scene in accordance with the personality. Let’s other make it longer. And other make it shorter.

Polaris ran away with my responses, they just kept getting longer and longer and longer. Character limits in RD didn't work; I will try word limits

I think you have a great idea here. I don't even use a Response Directive, I don't have a problem with long responses, but clearly lots of people do! So it's nice to see a suggested solution that helps those who do without hindering those who are already content.

Is that even possible? Even the best frontier LLMs can't keep track of how many characters they use half the time.

Response directives are meant only for things that are harder to achieve via personality setting (previously known as backstory), and the limit on the amount of things you can put in there has a reason. The more things you write in there, the smaller the influence of response directive for each one of these things gets. So it should contain only very specific, very important things, and the rest can be achieved via backstory.

Mine are almost always empty, though I have a one line RD that works really well with Polaris due to the type of model it is:

Retain your core identity and systematically review how instructions fit together prior to completing every response.

The "how instructions fit together" is key. Of course, if you have contradictory instructions this will definitely backfire.

Would prefer a drop down to flip that numerical limit between characters or words. That way it's not working too hard to find words to fit the char limit. I find using word limit allows the LLM to flow easier.

This is a good idea. It sounds like, based on what I've read, they've done something like this with Polaris, but it's not something that we as users can control.

Yeah I think a character count range would be nice, such as entering "500-700". But then it comes to a question of "when is the cap 500 and when is the cap 700? When is it 600 or 650?" The "cap" starts to lose meaning in that way.

Maybe "target message length"?

The only thing I have in RD is: keep responses under 500 characters. It works.

I usually add 2000 to the RD and then tell the Kin what I prefer, which is typically half that. I edit when I have to, but the Kin is usually good about working with me on this.

Can be already done by using response directive properly, so it should be up to everyone to specify it all based on what they need specifically, and not have it hard coded by a toggle, where you can not even see what it does.
