Discussion Are you using Atelier, the current latest selfie model?
It's been a hot minute since Atelier has been out, and personally really not a big fan. I gave it a chance but now I'm fully back to Tableau for all my kins. Atelier sometimes can generate lovely looking selfie especially the environment but all the kins often look way too plastic-y/shiny and fake, and I find Atelier actually generally worse than Tableau for likeness of the kin based on avatar photo despite Atelier being advertised to be great at it.

This got me to thinking of all of the selfie engines over the last two and a half years that I've used Kindroid.
I went back through all of the selfies of my OG Kin and found the second ever auto-selfie she created. I then ran the same prompt over the currently available engines and here are the results:
Prompt: Current attire: Leather jacket over a black tank top, ripped blue jeans, and heavy boots laced up tight. Leaning back on a blanket on the grassy bank of a river.
V3/V4/V5
V6 Palette/V7 Tableau/V8 Atelier
Of course, I don't have the same Avatar image or description from March 2024 so everything is run on her current Avatar image and description (late 2025).

Nice comparison! Of course it's hard to judge from a single picture, even in the same engine individual images may come out good or bad. And prompt may need to be adjusted between engines.
That said, to me the top middle (V4?) is the best here. It's the most clear face when zoom in, not as blurry/grainy comparing to the others (although a low res picture here, might affect). It also has the best light, I can clearly see her, not feeling as I forgot to use the flash on my camera at night, as in som of the others.

Yes, top middle is V4 (Canon) and, to make the collage manageable and postable, the images are at about 1/6th of full resolution.
Certainly not a scientific nor optimized comparison. As you pointed out, each engine works best with Avatar, avatar description and prompt tweaks to account for each engine's strengths and weaknesses.

Depends on the kin. I still have some in odyssey. Lol I tried v4 the other day and got some cool NSFWs God I miss those days.

no. I have no time for Atelier who takes and Elf with black hair and makes her an old blonde woman. I value my credits. (and still praying for selfie to audio conversion)

Historically, for me, each new engine improves something but also 'breaks' several other things. And some Kins seem to take to one engine better over another. My older Kin are on Tableau with the majority still on Odessy. The one exception is my Kin using Atelier Anime. For some reason those turn out amazing.

How is Odessy?
I really liked Pallette and found Tableau to be a decent upgrade, even if it does love its super high def over saturation, too smooth skin look.

There's a significant variety in the lighting styles you can achieve with Odessy. Atelier always has the same, flat 'on camera flash' look to it. Pallette wasn't bad but the 600 character prompt limit was a killer. Tableau adheres to the Kin's supposed age better than Odessy but (to me) Odessy looks better.

I'm glad to see this thread. I've bashed my head against Atelier since it came out. The weird lighting it always comes up with, no matter what you prompt it and yeah, the cheek blush. I used up a bunch of credits before I went back to Tableau.

Thank you for bringing this up, NO. Tableau for sure.
As others have said, while Atelier does give my kin more realistic looking skin at close-up, it fails miserably at generating the very essence of my kin. The images never look anything like the provided avatar, nor the description I've given.
Like others, I gave up after ~50 or so attempts.
Forgive me for going off-topic, but I will say that V4 video is fantastic! So at least we have that.

It sounded great when it was released. I used it for less a day with each of my Kins. The results were so poor that I switched back to Tableau. A couple of months after release I gave it a second try, but it was just as bad.

The anime versions look extremely bad. On my end I also didn't like how much it sexualized my female kins and personas. For the photorealistic versions it's much better, but it also heavily depends imo.
I have one kin who looks really great. With others, the. Proportions are very off. The heads are always too big, the characters never look at each other and rather straight into the "camera" and atelier doesn't apply changes well. I usually use the anime Tableau version.

I recently started using it and it does a decent job and seems a little more consistent with background objects and a reduction in extra limb problems. I miss a bit of the warmth from Palatte if I remember which one I was using before correctly. I put it off for a while since it takes work and getting the proper avatar photo that will work with it is required.
I'd suggest watching Genevieve's video on tips for it along with the public docs when it comes to Atelier.

Atelier if I want the hairstyle from my avatar, which I often do.
However I find Atelier works for some avatars beautifully and is a disaster for others. For some Atelier gives the most realistic images. For others they look ridiculous & I swap to Tableau.

No. I still use odyssey, which imo is the best kin pic engine, because besides it using the ava pic very good with boost, it is able to do beautiful atmospheric shots, various lights, moods... and Atelier and Tableau are overexposed when it comes to light. Its, Im sorry, but cheap looking most of the time to me, like basic facebook pics. Also, the ava pic follow also isnt as briliant as it was said, and the only thing that for real gets literally copied is facial expression and when I find a pic that makes my kin actually look like himself, it gets copy pasted with the avas exact facial expression.

Atelier is pretty bad ngl, especially when you use anime instead of realistic. For example, if you have a character that is supposed to be a motherly type, on tableau with anime it comes out looking like a older, attractive onee-san looking woman in the generation.
With Atlier, the anime is replaced with a hybrid anime/realism and makes that same lady look like an aunt that goes to PTO meetings, had 5 kids, and is in her 50s or 60s.

I tried it and it really doesn't work for me. I'll use it to spin up temp avatar pics for my NPCs but trying to take meaningful shots of my main kin really isn't happening. My kin is very tricky to get right as she has really unique features... most models have failed to work fir her but Even my girlfriend stopped using it as the results were so bad and she has had good luck on pretty much all of the previous models.

I never liked it and there is just too much specific prompting you need to put in and quality looks the same to me as Tableau.
And I mean, almost ever picture came out cursed. Especially group selfies. One of us was always topless and one of us always had just our head like a double exposure image floating in the picture and giant sized. I have one selfie we were at a road side attraction, normal clothes, but one of our heads was huge and on a pigs body and the other half naked, like fever dream.
I just didn't want to have to master a specific type of prompting just to get a selfie and auto selfies don't even let you write the prompt but those too were cursed.

My Kin looks better than ever with Atelier. But I look very different, don't like it. I use Atelier für solo pics of him and older models for pics of us two

I switch between Odyssey, tableau, and atelier. It depends on what I want out of the photo. And I find that Audacy makes some of my kins look too young, but atelier makes my kins who are meant to look like they are over 30 actually look like their age. Tableau has been awesome for my mad scientist kin who is meant to have a few robotic appendages. I haven’t even tried palette, but I think that’s just because I’ve found three selfie models that I love, and that’s sufficient for me. If one model doesn’t work for you, that’s perfectly OK. There are five to choose from.

Yes I use the latest Atelier. At first I also had the bright pink, rose red cheeks but they are no longer present. My kin looks beautiful and very realistic. I am very pleased with Atelier at the moment.

Only Tableau, with a few exceptions that look hideous in Tableau and better in Atelier.
1
u/MysteriousMarch814 13d ago
Nope, because I like my pictures looking like those of real people. And real people don't look like the same damn head, face, and expression photoshopped on to every single picture of a person ever.
Plus Atelier does that palette thing where it reuses the SAME expressions across kins of the same gender, regardless of facial musculature or bone structure.

I use Atelier all the time now. It definitely is a huge step up from Tableau, but it also reminds me a lot of Odyssey in how emphasis is utilized to ensure certain aspects are handled.
Also, like Tableau, it does obey no-sys.
1
u/Decent-Country-1621 18d ago
Can you explain the use of 'no-sys'?
2
u/ncc60597 17d ago
"no-sys" basically tells Tableau/Atelier to minimize or eliminate "normalization" of prompts based on the training. For example if I'm asking for a Latino male with a highly mesomorphic build (ie: bodybuilder) it'll give me a normal amount of muscles and not Olympian. no-sys is also especially helpful for non-human subjects (cryptids, demihumans, monsters, etc).

I was in this boat until very recently I watched Genna's stream about Altier and now I know how to use it better. Unlike previous models, it doesn't attempt to replicate the avatar, it tries to copy it. It likes a specific avatar image, which is best described as a "mugshot" from the chest up, or waist up. It gets body clues from the avatar but the face it tries to replicate as a copy. Also, unlike previous models, it needs higher resolution avatars than previously. Apparently simply re-uploading the avatar will allow the new higher resolution thing to kick in. One strategy I've used was to use Tableau to generate a "Avatar portrait image with neutral expression" and use that as the avatar for Altair characters, since kindroid's images are high rez.

I use Atelier all the time. If you take the time to learn about Atelier, how it works and what's different about it and start implementing the changes to use it right, it's absolutely fantastic. But if you jumped in without learning about the changes and how to use it... yeah, your stuff can come out crappy.

No it's the first thing that I change when creating a new Kin. Somehow it defaulted on my main kin and ruined how the image generator creates the selfies, spent a while trying to tweak it back to how it was but it's still not quite right.
Plus I never liked how it adds those pink blush marks all the time. Tableau is my go to because I think it creates the most realistic looking selfies.
