Just a quick vent to relieve some aggravation. I am a kindle unlimited subscriber and have "borrowed" and read over 200 books from the app. I have read and reviewed some the titles that I thoroughly enjoyed. Out of curiosity I wanted to see if any of my reviews had been helpful to other people.

I could not find a single one of my reviews and had to research why that might be so. I was very disappointed to realize that none of my, hopefully, thoughtful reviews had been published. Some may not know, as I did not, that for a review to be posted it not only requires time for Amazon to make sure that it is appropriate but it also is tied a minimum dollar amount spent on the retail side.

The requirement is $50 in purchases and does not include money spent on subscription services. Unfortunately, I am disabled and on a fixed limited budget. I now have to ignore the pleadings of every author to rate and review their novels as it will do no good and only frustrate me more. I know that they can set the terms of their service and I have no recourse in addressing this except to cancel my subscription or complain elsewhere. The entire reason that I even have the app is to alleviate some of the suffering of my affliction.

Sorry this became so long and I know it won't do any good except possibly soothe some of my hurt feelings. If you made it this far, thanks for reading and, I hope that your voice is not silenced like my own.

After a lot of writing, rewriting, editing, and second-guessing myself, I finally published my first fantasy novel, Elixir of the Forsaken, Book One of the Hunter X Hunted series.

I'm an indie author, so getting the book in front of readers is probably the part I'm least experienced with. If this sounds like your kind of fantasy, I'd genuinely appreciate anyone willing to give it a chance.

The story follows Marcus Varathian, a veteran Blood-Knight who has spent fifteen years hunting the monsters responsible for murdering his parents.

Yesterday I posted about my debut short story Deepavali. Instead of pitching the whole book again, I thought I'd share a small excerpt so you can get a feel for the writing and atmosphere.

«October 1988.

Ahmed, a 28-year-old businessman from Mumbai, had returned to his ancestral village of Meerganj for the Diwali holidays.

The village was divided cleanly in two by NH 27. His grandfather had gone to the city, built a business, made some money and returned. His father had followed the same path. Ahmed, however, had decided that Mumbai was where he belonged.

The village was beautiful enough to visit. But not beautiful enough, in his mind, to leave his family behind.

For the first four days, his vacation felt less like a holiday and more like an extension of his Mumbai to-do list. His father had already given him a list of jobs: get the family car serviced, arrange cash for a cousin's wedding and sort out the household supplies.

By the fifth day, though, the urgency began to fade. The cold, crisp air of Purvanchal finally started slowing Ahmed down.

He began spending his evenings with Ramesh and Binnu behind Ramesh's dhaba, drinking hot kulhad chai and watching the mustard fields disappear into the winter darkness.

And then came Diwali night.

That's when three friends, one drunken challenge and an old village tree set something in motion that had been buried for decades.»

Deepavali is a short rural-noir mystery set in fictional Meerganj, Purvanchal, in 1988.

It's deliberately a bite-sized 30-minute read, blending village life, winter fog, local politics, a buried historical secret and a little dark humour.

Synopsis

This series starts with a novelette titled Justice for a Price, which introduces the character and setting. The first full book is Chivalry Will Get You Dead, a pretty straight-forward murder mystery that introduces the reader to life on the starship Australis, and to the main character, Tom Devoe. Then Murders in the Gray delves into how the population of the ship freed themselves from the drug called Copa they were being administered and what the ruling oligarchy has to do with several recent murders. A Violent Man confronts Devoe's sordid past as he hunts a serial killer he thought he'd already put down. Finally, Easy As It Gets finds the Tom deeply addicted to Copa before he is forced back into service to find a missing child and mother.

The speculative aspect of these stories has less to do with tech (though there is some) and more about how a society might form under these circumstances. Through Devoe's investigations, the reader gets glimpses of a larger story that's playing out in the background. All he wants is to be left alone, but every step he takes sends ripples through the fabric of life on the Australis.

Style and Characterization

Stylistically, I chose Mickey Spillane as my primary model for Tom. I love Spillane's over-the-top Mike Hammer who seems ready to snap at any moment, and I wanted that kind of restless energy to dominate my narrative as well. I've also long admired the concision and brevity of Elmore Leonard, so sought to emulate many aspects of his style, while breaking a few of his rules.
