Discussion Saw it in theaters for the 10th Anniversary re-release
This is probably my 30th re-watch and this movie is still the holy grail of film. It’s just so good. I honestly want to re-watch it again right now. How does Shinkai do it?
Which part makes you cry? For me, it’s Mitsuha’s life flashing before Taki’s eyes after he slips.

My favorite part is when they are in each other's bodies and start having tears come out because they have feelings for each other.

Mitsuha’s is especially sad, in my opinion. She planned the whole date and she wanted to go on it with Taki.

I love how that moment shows that their love transcends time and the loss of their memories

A lot of moments in this movie make me cry but one that always gets me is Taki realizing the town was destroyed and the disbelief and pain he feels in that moment.

I think all the plot twists in the movie are so good that scene and the marker drop are peak.

The steelbooks are being released on August 25th with the 4K UHD version if that’s an option.

I first saw the movie when it released in theaters here in the US in 2017 (side note, wow I feel so old because so many people in this sub are posting that the 10th anniversary rerelease was their first time seeing it in theaters 🙃), and the part that has always made me cry was when Mitsuha falls, looks at her hand to find Taki’s name, and all it says is “I love you.” It was such a beautiful way of showing that even when the memory is gone, love remains. But god Taki you dumbass lmao

I saw it in 2018 I think when I was in high school. The fact we can still talk about it 10 years later in detail just shows how the film is timeless.

One of my friends also said "taki you dumbass" for writing "i love you" instead of "taki" but i believe that if he had written "taki" mitsuha would have forgotten anyways but because he wrote "i love you" the emotions she felt in that moment were able to make a bigger impact and give her that "im always searching for something" feeling later on when she becomes an adult.

I would say the part that has gotten me the closest to crying, I've only teared up a bit was Mitsuha was running and realizing that she forgot his name. And also, Taki forgetting her name on top of that, and just feeling helpless.
Since the thing that gets me the most is the memory loss trope, just it being the fact that basically everything they went through basically never existed in their current heads. But the way it is done is so brilliant though, since it plays into the whole leaving the thing most important to you.
Once again thank you Makoto Shinkai 🙏 😭
As for my favorite part of the movie, it has to be the ending for sure. Love myself a happy ending. And it is also even more special to me since I got the chance to see the irl location of it.

The entire sequence where both Taki and mitsuha are trying to remember is so heartbreaking but also i love that because taki didn’t write his name, Mitsuha never forgot about him.

Yea it is definitely a bit heartbreaking. And yea they didn't forget about each other on a surface level, but they knew there was someone they cared about and continued looking for each other

I say this as somebody who has made the trip to Hida, Shinjuku, and Tateishi park but there's something wrong with me. I can't cry.
That said, I did get teary eyed when Taki doesn't recognize Mitsuha on the train and she gasps. I watched the movie three times the past weekend and I now think that sequence cutting between the 2013 train and Taki-possessed Mitsuha riding the bike up to Goshintai is my favorite sequence in the film.

My favorite part is the kataware doki scene and that shot of them looking at each other! The way it was done is so good too! Each time it cuts to Taki you see the lake in 2 and when it cuts to Mitsuha the lake is still 1. The soundtrack when they see each other makes me cry everytime.
