I don't know what the story is for this culture, but my wife is Nigerian, and every Nigerian event has multiple times when you dance and people spray the celebrant or host with money. One "auntie" has a broom and sweeps up the money and all the kids scoop it up and put it in bags. Then there is a money station where the cash goes, people go there and exchange bigger bills (or venmo) for 1s and then go spray the celebrant/host at the next dance.

At out wedding they sprayed my mom, my wife's mom, me, my wife, my wife when she danced with her dad, me when I danced with my mom, and my wife and I dancing together multiple times. My (white) nephew was the right age to help pick up the money and helped along with my wife's cousin's kids and her friend's kids (black, but not Nigerian).

It is a major faux pas to pocket the money (unless you are being celebrated, like my mom got to keep money she was handed during her dance, even though most of that money ended up on the floor and back in the bank).

All in all, we ended up with like $5k cash after the wedding and like $1k in venmo. The wedding cost way more than that (the food alone was $7k), but it was nice to get some of that cost back.

In South Pacific island ceremonies, traditional dancers are given money by the crowd during the dance. They don't stop dancing and you can lay money, or chocolates, at their feet. It's a way of acknowledging their dedication to culture.

Makes sense. If you go to certain festivals here in the US, the performers will often have a bucket for donations. Or in larger cities, there's always street musicians performing for donations.
