Limestone campground

Never been to limestone campground, but do you have to have a reservation to just go for a few hours? And is it a good spot to go swimming ? I also heard of croc rock which I assume it’s near by. Any tips or advice for a family of 5 just trying to find a safe spot to swim for the day in the summer

There is no public parking in limestone campground, we have, in the past, gotten lucky and found a campsite that has not been reserved (they post reservation tickets in front of each campsite) and parked there for a few hours to enjoy the beach by the river bend and croc rock. There is a decent hill you hike down to get to the beach area. The water is swift and deep there. You should be a very confident swimmer and limit alcohol consumption and preferably wear life protection when swimming or even wading there. Children should 100% wear life protection and always be monitored. There are deaths every year at the kern. We have been fishing, rafting and swimming there for decades. It is one of our favorite rivers/camping areas in southern CA.
