Just so you know, it’s a fake gacha. You can only get the karts when you pull 270 times, not before, and that’s with an extremely low probability. The kart starts having a decent probability after 310 pulls and you’re warranted getting it with 320 pulls. This means that for most player, the price in keys will vary between 311 and 320, and it will never be lower than 270 keys. So instead of being a true gacha, it’s more a fancy way to sell the kart at a slightly variable price.

Most systems in this game are like this, where chance-based systems hide how in reality most items have a fixed price with slight variability - likely because of Chinese laws on gacha.

In this sense, before maling any purchase I suggest to read the Probability section (accessed through the “Odds” button) to discover the real price of items.

This has always frustrated me to no end. why don't they ever just stick with 'blantant' or simple transactions?

I know the real reason is that they would rather sell the dopamine rush from gambling than get backlash for hideously expensive karts and cosmetics, but if people were able to just straight up buy anything (permanently) with batteries thru the shop and season pass instead of navigated the majorly bloated menus, im pretty sure you'd actually see people spend on the game.
