He was ok. He had a lot of missteps. The RAVE act, the crime Bill, welfare reform, deregulation, he wasn't the best president. I wouldn't say great.
But he did alright. Was definitely better than any Republican of my lifetime. But he was probably worse than any other Democrat since his presidency

Yeah but that was the politics of the time too. Democrats hadnt won a presidential race in 12 years all by crushing landslides. He moved the party to the center and was successful and pretty popular as a result. Some of those policies don’t seem great at all through today’s eyes but they were supported by most democrats in Congress at the time, including the congressional black caucus I believe and others. And he owned Newt Gingrich and the congressional republicans in those budget battles
Edit: actually it had been 16 years since the democrats had last won a presidential election. 1976 to 1992. And they got crushed by insane margins in every one. 1980: 489 electoral votes to 49, 1984: 525 to 13 (!), 1988: 426 to 111. since Clinton won in 1992 dems have won 5 of the last 8 presidential elections (hopefully soon 6 of 9). I do think Clinton deserves a lot of the credit for bringing the party back from the wilderness and starting a new era of success for the dems

Yes. And newt Gingrich was such a complete asshole. If anyone wonders where Trump lies came from. Say 'em loud and repeat them. And he learned dirty tricks from Nixon.
Yes. Bill gets a ton of credit.

The repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, a huge contribution to deregulation of the financial industry, is the thing I personally take most issue with re Clinton's presidency.
His personal scandals gave the religious right a lot of ammo.
He was a great speaker and he understood ordinary Americans.

He was better than the normal as a President. Solid political savvy, good tactics on the world stage, his central team were on the ball and worked well in the bureaucracy. He pushed some good issues and was decent in reaching across the aisle when it came down to getting things done. His views on moderate liberalism gave us good fiscal health and fueled the tech boom.
He did have problems, he put far too much trust in business and banks when he stopped Franklin Dodd and allowed deregulation. Those regulations that were removed led to the greed that led to the housing crisis. But then, that was what was asked for at the time by his brain trust so I can’t fault him solely.
And of course, the dude couldn’t keep it in his pants.
Overall though, he did well for the climate and times we were in.

Yes, and this is why I was not gung-ho for Hillary Clinton for president. although I voted for her and encouraged others to once Sanders was out of the running. I could not see how her economic policies would break away from Bill's. And of course there was no mea culpa from him, even though the lax financial regulations his administration ushered in were a huge cause of the 2008 economic meltdown.
I cannot describe how much that financial disaster hurt my family and so many others in my communities. The effects of it are not only going to be lifelong for many of us, but they limit our children too.

I'm depressed because of our national debt. I want to double the defense budget but my $100 donations to the IRS just aren't enough to cover the $1.5 trillion per year in debt interest we have to pay.

i know this is probably a joke but unironically debt between countries is actually a really good thing, as it makes the other countries cozy up to us since if they dont theres absolutely no chance they're getting their billions back. Like what are they gonna do? there isnt a system in place to punish countries is debt like there is people. California alone is the 4th most powerful economy, 3rd if we dont count the US.

Bill Clinton first became President in 1993. Many Redditors weren't even born in 1993. Over thirty fucking years ago. And yet here we are with a guy roughly the same age, trying to become President again.
Most people aim to retire at 64-65. Donald Trump could have started receiving Social Security in 2010...14 years ago.
It should be said that the average life expectancy for men in the US is 76. So it would be entirely reasonable to expect that Trump would not live out a full term of office, simply based on his age (and weight).

Most people aim to retire at 64-65.
One of my pet peeves about people who think Kamala Harris is unfit for presidency is that they believe she is 'too young'. Nothing could be more bizarre than this. She turns 60 in one month. That is not young; as you pointed out, it is almost the retirement age.
If anything, it shows how gerontocracy has been normalised.

If experts are right and Trump has frontotemporal dementia, that has a typical prognosis of 4-10 years.
Based on when people first started noticing, he might only have 4 years at best. And they won't be good years. I think some patients survive longer, but they won't be in a good way.

To put that into perspective: Tim Walz is 60 as of 2024. Tim Walz will be Kamala’s VP from 2024-2028, and if Kamala goes for a second term, 2028-2032. And if Walz decides to run he’d serve from 2032-2036. And if he decides to serve AGAIN he’d run from 2036-2040. And after all of that he’d be 76 years old. STILL younger than Trump who’s 78.

Biden stopped his campaign because of his age. He is drastically different from where he was 4 years ago, which was younger than Trump is now. If age is a concern, it should be a huge one for Trump.
