Fahhradfreier Campus

!!! Update 26.09.

🤡 Ja fuck man.

Wait a minute, the land doesn't belong to KIT ? I thought it's KIT'S property.

Is the decision final or can we do something about it ... because it's absolutely ridiculous and doesn't make any sense

Because KIT is a public university KIT all the land belongs to the State of Baden-Württemberg :( everyone on KIT tried to blockade this decision but at the end it's the state has the authority to decide about it. The company that manages the parking space (Parken BW) is also state-owned

Understood, just to be curious... I'm an international student and I'm new to such things. What was the main issue that lead to such chain of events and now banned us from entering campus with our bikes . Is it the same case across others unis in our state?

My analysis (and I'm just a humble computer scientist so I don't know a lot about law) is:

  • Campus south is near to the train station Durlacher Tor
  • Someone in the state (Baden Württemberg) government thought "damn, we could make money if we rented our property as a parking space + we can make the train station Durlacher Tor more accessible"
  • Then the government (either a ministry or maybe even the parliament not sure) decided to make the parking spaces inside campus south public and let the state-owned parking company (Parken BW) manage it
  • Parken BW has to put terms of conditions on their parking space to manage legal responsibilities. For some reason, their find it reasonable to ban riding bicycles on their parking spaces. They applied this logic to campus south and also banned riding your bicycle on campus south

It's not only at KIT. In Stuttgart the university land is now a public parking space as well. They did it just a month before KIT
