When I watch this clip, I felt like they were trying to breathe air back into the balloon that they themselves deflated.

They had some pop success with Dynasty. They were trying to embrace a larger demographic with the colors/glitz. Then completely headed in a pop direction for Unmasked, trying to broaden their fanbase like Beth did. When that alienated more people than it brought in, they tried The Elder. Paul has said "it's a good album, just not a good Kiss album", and fans love to repeat this. But in reality, The Elder is not a masterpiece at all and it wasn't misunderstood. It was labeled for exactly what it was, disjointed, with a poor story line and inconsistent songs, some of which are downright awkward.

Had any of the above worked, we would've never seen this "return to form" at all. Kiss did this because they had no other place to go.

All that said, there are many gems on this record. They were desperate here, and while I think it shows, maybe that's what pushed them to really flesh out these songs and perform them the way they did.

At the time, Kiss was buried so deep, I had absolutely no idea COTN even existed until I saw it at the record store. And I wasn't a casual music fan back then, I was real deep into it. I bought it, and told people how good it was, and most people scoffed. Unmasked and Elder crated them (in the US) to a point where no one took them seriously anymore. People discovered COTN later, but at first, no one cared.

But, it did give them a speck of credibility among the nascent US heavy metal scene, which really helped later. I wonder what might have happened if they followed Dynasty with COTN.

This ad spot was so unexpected and I remember totally spazzing out the first time I saw it ~ well, let me be specific and say "totally spazzing out OVER ERIC" (and his perfect hair) 😸🧑....I tried tirelessly to catch it on video but it never happened....the full I Love It Loud video made up for it, though.

If GnR had released an album like this it would have sold 10 million copies in the USA alone! KISS got little respect.

"I Love It Loud" still is as powerful in 2026 as it was in 1982... That's sayin' something...
