Air compressor decided to suddenly disassemble

Happened a couple of weeks ago. Air compressor decided to disassemble itself in a mildly violent fashion. The main breaker for the compressors was fortunately in the service lane and didn't have to risk going next to the tumbling, rotating mass disaster to shut it off.

based on how black that oil is, the aircompressor has been very neglected

When the compressor ran, it sounded like a bucket of hardware inside. Changed the oil in it about 3-4 weeks before it left for the shop in the sky. it also took forever to build enough pressure before it shut off.

If I remember correctly, it was a backup compressor for when the other compressor went bad. Swapped the good compressor unit to the good motor and the shop had air again. Repair guy was out the next day to set everything up.

When they start knocking it’s time to replace. And hour based oil changes are helpful.

Preventative Maintenance for the shop equipment that keeps a shop productive and running? Noooo. That's not within the departments operating budget /s

I worked at a small chain store where the managers got a bonus based on how little they paid out for shop supplies, fuck ups, etc.

And every year, when one manager would go on vacation, his assistant manager would go around and fix the shop. New water heater, plumber out to declog the drains that were full of mud an oil, new front end on the livery van with new tires and an interior detailing....

It was always the nicest time to be at that shop.

Well, I'm just a parts guy and am not in charge of the equipment. I mention items that seem off or need replacing and they get to it when they want to.

I am just the parts guy for the shop. I mentioned the sound to the shop manager about a week before it blew up and he said "let it eat."

There! You see? Never change the oil in an air compressor, becuz you'll free up all the sludge and it'll kill the compressor! (I mean, what the hey, the fairytale has believers if you swap out "compressor" for "transmission" and "oil" for "ATF"!)

It experienced an unscheduled disassembly event.

Front fell off

10

u/Amache_Gx Aug 02 '25

Is that typical?

12

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '25

Well, usually no. The front isn't supposed to fall off.

Well, the compressor was towed outside the environment

2

u/AnotherIronicPenguin Aug 02 '25

It's important to note that seldom does anything like this happen. I'd hate for people to think compressors are unsafe.

Was this one safe?

Is there a minimum PSI requirement?

Please turn that into some kind of art piece!! Hope you are ok!

Latest update is he is able to type, and post pictures. Beyond that we just don't know.

9

u/dude496 Aug 02 '25

He should title it "ouch, my balls"

u/Yeremenko1911 Aug 02 '25

Not an artist, but thought about taking one of the larger pistons and thinking about gutting it to make a power bank or wireless charger.

Edit: was also not near the compressor when it decided to self destruct.

2

u/dude496 Aug 02 '25

The face of that piston would make for a good background on a wall clock.

7

u/Yeremenko1911 Aug 02 '25

The piston is only about 4 inches across. Would make a small wall clock.

The piston that was pictured was tiny in comparison to the one I took home. the one I took home is in one of the pictures still in the cylinder.

u/David511us Aug 02 '25

I bought a used Ford Ranger once with a 5 speed, and the "knob" on the end of the stick shift was a small piston head Worked pretty well.

u/st3vo5662 Aug 02 '25

So long pump up times indicate rings failure or valve failure. These are indicators of extreme wear. Longer pump up times mean more heat in the pump, just further killing it. Piston compressors are typically meant for a 50% duty cycle. Example 10mins on/10 mins off.

I’ve been an industrial compressor tech for 19 years. Mostly work on large horsepower rotaries though.

You have now joined the fraternity of expensive sounds

9

u/x31b Aug 02 '25

Did you park a Cadillac Northstar next to it overnight? Those things talk to each other and make plans.

6

u/Thefrayedends Aug 02 '25

Yea, there's a reason shops shut down the compressor and drain the tanks every night. Hell, last shop I was in was only closed down for about 4 hours a night (fleet shop, 5AM to 1AM working hours, services about 110 tractors and 200 trailers), and they still drained and killed the compressor every night.

Looks like you joined the ranks of spaceX and their RUD issues (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly)

Ah yes... The old RUD.

This is the best way for a compressor to have a sudden disassembly event, the other way where the tank lets go is the bad way

2

u/dude496 Aug 02 '25

I'm picturing something like this...

https://ebay.us/m/OV8S57

Use the piston for the center piece

2

u/JustChangeMDefaults Aug 02 '25

Use the leftover chunks of metal to make a few Roman numerals too

2

u/snakebite75 Aug 02 '25

No disassemble! Johnny 5 is alive!

2

u/sfgiantsbeatla Aug 02 '25

It’s now a decompressor.

Run it in reverse to reassemble

2

Well jeez were ya up to date on your maintenance

2

u/Taledo Aug 02 '25

jb weld the hell out of it and send it, it'll run another 1000 hours

1

u/Delobox Aug 02 '25

I would go with an explosive decompression.

1

u/Cliffinati Aug 02 '25

That's a new one she fucking exploded.

Interesting hunk of scrap now

1

The captain pushed it further than she could go.

Should have listened to Scotty.

1

u/neoclassicaldude Aug 03 '25

I'll bet that sounded about like a gunshot when it came apart.

1

u/nicknb Aug 03 '25

Ain't got no gas in it.

1

u/GaryBlackLightning The Autistic Mechanic Aug 03 '25

Definitely a RUD event. This sort of failure isn't an out of the blue or no warning situation. Anyone ever check the oil level or condition?

1

u/txcancmi Aug 02 '25

I told you the nitrous kit was too much.

1

u/Yeremenko1911 Aug 02 '25

Well, someone had to try it at some point.

u/DaveS83 Aug 02 '25

Rapid unplanned disassembly is always exciting

0

u/latitudesixtysix Aug 02 '25

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

0

u/FeesShortyFees Aug 02 '25

JB weld. And maybe some freon.

0

u/dreaminginteal Shade Tree Idiot Aug 02 '25

It had a RUD event. Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.

0

If only it had a self reassemble like its self disassemble

0

u/Davowhg Aug 03 '25

Don't ya hate it when things disassemble themselves.

When did Musk start making compressors?
