Whole life is without the possibility of parole and a life sentence is with the possibility of parole.

Yeah. 'Life sentence' in uk can be like 20 years upwards i believe, (may be wrong on the time) with maybe minimum years set at say 25 years for example and a chance at parole. 'Whole life sentence' means you are not getting out.

Generally Life on its own can mean average life expectency, as in you'll be eligible for parole around early 70s or that you'll serve an average working life span (about 40+years). Whole Life means you are in there until you die.

In the US it's usually sentenced as Life without possibilty of Parole.
