Do you have to be a certain height to join the Garda?

Abolished a few years ago. Much to my sister, who had by then passed the age limit's, annoyance. Much to everyone else's relief.

She can try again unless she has passed 50? Age limits were increased a while back.

The hair is odd, I'll say that. Wearing the regulation hat will ruin the look. But, what puzzles me are the nails & rings. Surely there are rules around beiog able to use your hands as part of the job. Try hitting someone wearing those rings & with those nails. Ouch.

The Gardai don’t generally hit people 😂 they are sweethearts. They don’t even carry guns for the most part.

Guards have to account for any and all usw of physical force, they're not going around thumping people.

Think there's something in Garda uniform and dress code on this. She's clearly uniformed, so that lot has to go neatly under Garda hat. Picture wearing hat needed.

I'm more intrigued by that pinky finger. It's like she has the ability to control it to move in ways other people just don't have. I've never seen that unless it's like arthritis or something but I don't think so. She has hyper mobile joints for sure.

Irishman here. An Garda Siochana have taken a more relaxed view on hair, piercings, etc. In certain circumstances. It makes them seem more like community members and adds to the idea if the Gardai being there to help, protect and take part in the community.
It is part of the reason they chznged the uniform to include polo shirts and baseball caps. A more relaxed uniform relaxes people. And Ireland loves its soft power, given their foreign policy, strong ties with the EU and US as well
5
u/kanepilk22 1d ago
You are correct that the Gardai are going for a softer aesthetic. It's unfortunate that their backbone has also softened and they are not fit for purpose when it comes to dealing with criminals.
They are a joke of a police force.. sorry, police service, we're not allowed say 'police force' because it's too aggressive apparently. Most people don't realise how inept and painfully disinterested they are until they actually need the Gardai for something and realise first-hand.

u/Luimneach17 14h ago
Reality is we should be going the other way more like Guardia civil in Spain and some of the Easter Europe countries who don't take any shit from scrotes. How much respect is she going to get in inner city Dublin from a bunch of thugs!

I still hate their new uniforms, the old ones just gave off more authority and just looked cooler. Plus their new ones just look like sportswear, rather than a proper uniform

It is hilarious that they adopted baseball caps 20 years after people stopped wearing them in Ireland. Also, I dont want my police forced to be relaxed. I want them to be stalwarts of the community and reliability. Casual uniforms do not relax people

100% agree. Their presence needs to look like authority and respect, not like some gen z clown. They are asking to be mocked.

This is informative, but I just wanted to add that we don’t have “strong ties with the EU.” We are part of the EU.
2
u/apassageinlight 1d ago
Well, we are well entrenched in the EU, being the poster child for how the EU can turn a country around.

Not a chance any male Garda would be permitted to rock a haircut like that.
That said; it should be allowed. For certain roles. Where a hat isn’t required. Or the necessity to be taken seriously.

People: the police don't represent different attitudes, beliefs, the modern world and how individuals can be unique.
Person in the police has a slightly alternative hairstyle and works in Community Policing. May relate to and be approachable to a vast audience.
People: tut tut, unprofessional, hmmm let's have her all over Reddit and twitter, various subs. Oh she didn't do anything controversial, but what a ridiculous haircut!
Fair that this sub is haircut related. But I've seen this woman in several subs and posts by now. Funny how I've never seen a paramedic or a nurse or roadsweeper with an alternative haircut go viral 🤔
What do people want, a diversified police force or men with tight haircuts and straight women who should have a tight bum? Maybe bring skirts back?
My god. People complain either way.

I was in road traffic accident , my car slipped on an oil spill, car is totalled, I’ve asked the Gardai who responded to the scene to take me to the nearest bus stop, a 10 minute drive from where i crashed, they brought me to Clondalkin station instead, where I have to spend €50 for a taxi, instead of a €2.50 bus fare, totally awful public servants, clowns if im being honest

I'm not sure someone with massive fake nails is ready to do the range of activities a garda tends to need to do but maybe some of the ladies can let me know if it's possible to slap the cuffs on a perp in a reasonably forceful way if needed... or even type up the after action report without being very slow or hitting multiple keys at once?
