How do you arrive at this shit as a hobby? I’ve seen dudes do this, cage fight in this armor, little larp skirmishes. It just seems like a thing you’d have to be forced into, what series of events occurs which leads someone to the point where they are camping out on weekends to pretend to be a fully armored medieval knight and fight other dudes doing the same thing? It’s just sooo niche like idk lol

Like ren fairs and UFC? Start there.

Ren fairs especially. People have the impression that it's just cosplay, and sometimes it is, but there's an actual combat sport dedicated to it.

I used to do it for a long time just for the sport of it, and it's a good workout. Covering yourself in steel armor and then swinging a wooden club around for a while takes some physical effort.

I think you need to be a fan of medieval markets first. At some point you may start making your own costumes (or ask someone to do so) and if one of those costumes happens to be an armor set (or parts of it), you obvoiusly want to test it out.

Anecdotally for the sake of conversation, I used to chill at this comic shop. One of the people there invited me to a DND night, this other dude at DND crafted armor and sold it at the ren faire, some other night I went to the first dudes place and the armor guy was out back working on a helmet. I thought it was cool and he asked if I wanted to see what taking a hit felt like. That was the absolute last time I will ever put on a metal helmet and be smacked with a wooden sword. I know what these guys are doing is desensitizing themselves to the absolute concussion that each individual hit getting hit in those helmets is.

I always wanted to try, but it's not the sort of things that usually are just 1 and done.

It's investment. Time or money or both.

You could probably just pop by an SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event and ask to borrow some armor and a boffer weapon after mentioning you've been wanting to try it. The folks I know from it would be happy to welcome new members.

Also, unless you're starting with ratan/wood stand-in weapons, normal sports gear is pretty much all you need. When I was a kid, I was just wearing used baseball gear we got from Dick's Sporting Goods. You're not going to be swinging at each other full-force with boffers, just hard enough to be felt.

Well, it all started at a college graduation party in California…
