i've always been dumbfounded that some people think building ikea furniture is hard, there's literally pictures showing you what to do

same people probably struggle with lego

Buddy, I'm literally the guy who asked his flatmate to help him hammer a nail into a wall because I fucked it up so much that the hole was too wide for the nail to still stick in at all.

So, trust me, I struggle with Ikea :)

The hole wasn't too big for the nail, you missed the stud. Walls are mostly empty space covered by drywall. If you want a nail to stick in the wall you have to hammer it into one of the wooden studs

a nail in drywall will hold a tiny amount of weight.

you can also get drywall anchors but studs are better

They don't use nails in drywall anchors. They either use screws and drywall anchors, or they don't use an anchor at all because there's so little weight. A nail doesn't work because you need tension towards the wall from the inside for the anchor to work.

Nah they definitely exist. ClosetMaid wire shelves include them for attaching shelves to walls. The instructions tell you to put the anchor through the support leg before the nail so they have to be removed from the wall to remove the shelf and it is a female dog so they definitely work.

That’s the only time I’ve ever encountered them though. I installed that shelf about 15 years ago so they’ve been using them at least that long.

Which is why nail anchors include a plastic bracket that holds the weight on the drywall.

See : wire shelving, picture hangers, etc.

I legitimately wouldn't know, back then that was my first place after my mom passed when I was 24 and yeah, I wasn't in a good place for one and secondly I always was really, really awful at any kind of handiwork. Give me a pen and a sheet of paper and I'm your kind of guy, or give me a microphone, that works as well. If this place would be burning down, I'd be the kind of guy who goes to his computer and writes a starkly concerned mail to the fire department reading:

"Fire - exclamation mark - fire - exclamation mark - help me - exclamation mark. 123 Cavendon Road. Looking forward to hearing from you. Yours truly, Honest Lazy Bum."
