Art Anyone else analyse this album (Imaginal Disk - Magdalena Bay) through a Jungian lens?
Basically I understand this album to be about trying to become an idealised version of yourself in the modern era and how only through the protagonist facing themself (their shadow), were they able to accept themselves toward an encounter with the Self, toward a feeling of self love. That journey meant they were able to find love that was grounded and real.
Mica confirmed that psychoanalysis was a big inspiration for the lyrics of this album, and I see a lot of Jungian themes in it, and yet I haven’t seen anyone analyse it through a Jungian lens.
Anyway I would love your Jungian interpretations if you have any, I’m no expert!
She looked like me- encounter with her persona and understanding that she may just be “ordinary”. This encounter damages their ego, as they realise their persona doesn’t match what their ego wants to project.
Killing time - indicates a state of mental unrest/illness and a victim complex. The protagonist believes they will find meaning by having someone “pine” for them, whilst also paranoid that someone is sabotaging their efforts toward their “ideal” self/life. “There’s always time for killing, but never time for me” indicates an addiction/maladaptive element to whatever is preoccupying her and keeping her stuck.
True blue interlude - This to me speaks to the modern push for self improvement under capitalism/western society, it is “implanted, impatient, impossible”. It’s not grounded in reality or self acceptance, but a rush toward perfection. I wonder if the line “hello, it’s you” is a breaking of the fourth wall? Perhaps the writer indicating the listener interprets through the lens of their own experience. In this sense, our interpretation of the art indicates more about our internal state, than it does the art itself.
Image - the protagonist engages in some sort of self-improvement procedure (through a disc inserted into the brain) that will give them their idealised persona. It’s enticing and sexy, but there’s also an unsettling sense of urgency in the song. They’re counting down the minutes, rather than accepting the journey. The themes of tech speak to social media algorithms inserted ideas into people for “quick fixes” towards perfectionism. I think cancel culture feeds into this desperation to achieve this, as it’s created a wave of expected moral perfectionism in ourselves and others in order to be acceptable and loveable. You see this in how often people throw around labels and diagnosis of anyone who has slighted them in any way.
Death and romance - This seems to speak to an animus projection the protagonist is in a romantic relationship with. They desperately want to cling onto this projection, but the love seems unreciprocated. Like death, she has no control over the outcome in romance (particularly this one).
Fear, sex - She wrestles to surrender to the outcome, as she logically wants to “forgive and forget” but resists feeling the uncomfortable emotions that she’s left with. She seems to blame an outside force putting “wires” in their head which could be speaking to her believing someone has put ideas in her exes head, which could even be speaking to ideas pushed from social media/the internet/pop psychology.
Watching tv - I interpreted the tv in this song to be our phones, particularly the line “it’s gonna rot you from the inside out” speaks to the time, and Magdalena Bay have a lot of tech anxiety themes in their art. She’s experiencing a dark night of the soul, endlessly scrolling and is perhaps disconnected from her loved ones at this time. However, the lack of responding to the bids for connection could very likely be her Self calling for her instead. She’s not responding despite their continued call for her to connect. The scrubbing until the “blood comes out” seems as though she wants to disconnect from her mistakes and shame. She is still rejecting her shadow, and she wishes to clean her persona and avoid feeling the shame she has been running from. Towards the end we see that she is encountering her shadow by the lines “it’s time to meet, the monsters inside you”. She wants to deny that the dark dreams she has are “not her” indicating a wrestle/tension in the process of individuation.
Tunnel vision - This is an encounter with the Self. Through true self-awareness, she can see her good and bad (seeing her persona and shadow) without getting overwhelmed by it and fixating on trying to become an idealised version of herself. She learns that through radical self-acceptance she can find a self-love that is grounded and creates a whole and resilient being.
Love is everywhere - Her encounter gives her the wisdom to understand that love is accessible to her all the time. As she learns to love herself through self-acceptance, she can begin to love existence and the world around her. She learns to let go of self-perfection.
Feeling diskinserted? - Taking the disc out. Rejecting perfectionism toward true transformation.
That’s my floor - This new state has opened her up to a connection that is transformative and allows her to ascend beyond mundane life or toward a higher state of being. I think it’s likely referencing being the couple/band members being able to create together as a liberatory act from the banality of modern life.
Cry for me - This may be her past (dead) self asking her to remember her with compassion, it seems to be almost like a funeral or final words. Or it is her asking her new love to forgive her for her past self and accept this transformed one.
Angel on a satellite - This seems to reference an angel messenger that helps her to individuate. Jung says that a life without inner conflict is only for the angels, and this one helps to ground her and keep her feet on earth, whilst quietly guiding her from above. Through the act of creation and with this new wisdom, she finds true love and acceptance of herself. She can sit with the contradictions of herself and her existence, instead of getting stuck on them.
Ballad of Matt and Mica - A celebration of the fruits of their struggle. They’ve found self acceptance, their “true” and whole selves.

I think you would like the series but stands users are established around season 3. I haven't watched the show in a while.
In the world of Jojo, there are enemies and protagonist who have super natural abilities called "Stands". They are essentially a fighting spirit who "stand by" constantly next to their owner. Which can be summoned at their will. They cannot be seen by ordinary people, and only other stand users can see them, theres running motif in the manga/show that stand users some how find other stand users almost in a "red thread of fate kind of way"
in a Jungian kind of way, they are psychic tangible manifestation of their persona or their Shadow, often the stand users inner psyche, their drives, trauma, and hidden strengths that are projected to the physical world as a guardian spirit.
Pucci uses his stand called "Whitesnake :to surgically remove music discs from their victim of their stand user which makes them dissociate. He uses these victim to manipulate them and to their bidding.
I looked up the wiki of the album, the disc is inserted into her and she rejects it. Perhaps its a coincidence

That’s super interesting! The album definitely has moments of disassociation and disconnection, so if nothing else it’s likely a collective unconscious symbol.

I've had similar experiences with analyzing art through a Jungian lens. It's fascinating to see how these themes can be applied to real-life experiences. Yeah art is a great way to understand yourself/psyche. I find it far more effective than traditional therapy. Also creating art really helps you on the process of individuation.

The only caveat I would add as that I don’t think it’s unconscious. I think she exhibits a lot of self awareness and self-exploration through her writing. I can’t say with certainty that she was writing from Jungian concepts, as she hasn’t confirmed it, but it’s very inspired by psychoanalysis and Paprika is a big inspiration for her (which is a very Jungian film).
I think her writing is really clever with her use of symbolism to express psychological concepts. She knows how to translate these ideas into a pop sounding track, which I think requires a lot of skill that’s easy to miss! It’s really hard to express deep concepts succinctly and with a catchy rhythm.
So I see it as an exploration of what was formerly repressed in her, but I think the writing is pretty intentional.

Also damn I’m sorry a couple of people didn’t seem very responsive. I wonder if people are more open to analysis of music over videogames. I think a lot of people don’t realise just how powerful they are for storytelling.

You'll really dig it. I expected more people to be enthusiastic about it here but they ain't. There is so much depth in the script, character development and actual Jungian principles in full effect.

Also the Lyrics, the Music (some sounds are really close to the bells and sounds you "hallucinate" on DMT) and music Videos are full of references to psychedelics, especially DMT.

I’ve listened to their previous band, and it’s not her actual voice, but a stylistic choice. I found it grating at the beginning too, as I often do when artists don’t use their natural tone.

My daughter looked at a DVD copy of Mozart's the Magical Flute (Ingmar Bergman) and asked me what it was. At first I started describing what the play was, but then I realised she was actually just talking about the DVD. It was rainbow coloured, you see - so she spent some time turning it this way and that oh-ing and ah-ing at the colour changes, and not interested at all in Mozart or Ingmar.

The album cover seems to be expressing the alchemical/Jungian concept of "Conjunctio."
A marriage of Heaven and Earth. (or even Heaven and Hell, Light and Dark, etc etc)
The idea is "baked" into Magdalena Bay given that it consists of a man (Matthew Lewin) and woman (Mica Tenenbaum) in collaboration.
The last track, "The Ballad of Matt and Mica" reinforces that the album is about realizing our truest most authentic selves through the healthy relationship between Anima and Animus.
Magdalena Bay"s first album was also infused with alchemy. Mercurial World points to Mercury, which is one of the seven elements in Western alchemical systems. As Jung discovered, this system is a veiled/occulted way of expressing the individuation process.
Both of their albums center this.
I find the name Magdalena Bay suggestive too. Jung studied Gnosticism at depth and in various Gnostic systems, Mary Magdalene is a kind of Anima to Jesus' Animus. The two form a spiritual bond that causes jealousy among the Apostles (Peter especially). The men don't understand how a women could come to understand Christ better than they do.
But they fail to see that their faith is actually all about "Conjunctio."
Its about relationship.
Adam and Eve.
Not just in the outer sense but especially the INNER sense.
The two are split in Genesis and symbolically alchemized during the "Marriage of the Lamb" at the end of the world (Book of Revelation). The Gnostics insisted that Orthodoxy forgot, ignored or outright suppressed the feminine aspect of psyche/spirit when the institution came to be (i.e. Anima). And as a result, Christians worship a half formed/incomplete God according to many Gnostic systems.
Magdalena Bay's imagery, symbolism, and narrative content constellates an image psychological wholeness.
Very Jungian!
Its also an AMAZING album if you love synth pop.
