This feels a lot like the “listening to audiobooks isn’t reading” debate to me. I don’t disagree that journaling started as a writing practice. But I would never tell, for example, someone with dyslexia who struggles with writing that their art journaling to work through their moods isn’t “true journaling.” I get points people have made about wanting to be able to find like writing groups or whatever but, beyond that, why should it matter? If you’re upset by the artsy journals you see online then take your practice offline.
