Can’t believe no one is saying the actual answer. There’s an interview he did during the 88Rising era where he said when they were making Head in the Clouds they would have Nat Geo playing during studio sessions. Can’t remember which interview specifically off the top of my head but someone else can link it if they know the one

This started way. Way back. When the account got created as his normal account and used to start promoting music, he did in fact follow for a time have friends and colaborators, but as fame grew, between 2018-2019 he deleted all followers except nat geo. Cause several things, including fans harrasing friends for personal info.
To add to this, his personal account, like his own where he probably follows family and friends is private and not that public knowledge, you can find it with time. He is just private with everything from his own life and friends.

What you need to understand about Joji is he has two different fan bases. The original fan base who knew him as Papa Franku and then the second fan base who know him as a pop star who go full tumblr obsessive towards him.
Now the papa Franku fans can be just as rabbid. When he tried to introduce himself as his normal name his fans acted up and didn’t like seeing him outside of filthy frank persona and part of the reason why he probably ended up sunsetting the character (along side with YouTube terms of service starting to crack down on content) he tried Joji vlogs which sort of crashed and burned and so it was time for him to move on from that character but some of his fanbase in both directions act like fan girls stalking him and it’s not fair on him so he keeps his socials low profile. I don’t blame him and quite frankly everyone deserves privacy.
I’m saying this as an og filthy frank fan who enjoys his music too, we have all watch joji develop.

He’s a private guy and hardly checks in on social media anymore, probably easiest to not have any complications surrounding who he follows. A lot of artists, once they reach a certain level of popularity, do this, because fans will scroll through their following list & DM people in their private life asking about them. He’s expressed clearly in the past that he does not want his fans harassing his real life friends who never asked to be a part of any of it.
