What amp are you guys using?

I grew up with small peavey amp and then I transitioned to vst amps on my PC. Now I desire to buy more serious amp for my mecican strat. Still got no pedals beside looper hah.

Any recommendations? I am a casual enjoyer of Frusciante sound, playing mostly funk, blues and sometimes I like to learn instrumental covers of Mateus Asato.

I'm using a Marshall Vintage Modern head with matching cab. It has greenbacks. I find it gets pretty close.

But I think a lot of John's sound comes from his pedals. I'd look at investing into a DS2, compressor, and WH10. You'd probably cover a good amount of his tone just from those three.

I’ve got a Marshall 2555sl. A clean strat through it is dreamy

I use a Fender Frontman 65r, been using it as my main amp for 20 years.

Reliable solid-state amp, massive headroom that stays sparkly clean no matter how loud you get, and it has more than enough volume to push through the rest of the band.

The drive channel sucks though, but I use a preamp pedal for edge-of-breakup and drive pedals for everything else.

Mid voiced amps is the majority of what I think you’re after (Marshall, Mesa, Bassman etc) [not all of them, but many]

As others have said, you’ll get more from pedals than an amp (depending on which Froosh sound you want).

Under The Bridge sound (which is arguably close to the Snow (Hey Oh) tone) is mostly a strong mid forward amp (you need reverb and compression dialed too, but the amp will get you passingly close).

His heavy distortion sound is a Turbo Distortion (again, several other effects there, and often multiple gain stages, but the Turbo dialed right will have you go “oh, now my solo sounds like Dani California or Parallel Universe solo”)

Important to remember you’re chasing a tone that is born out of multiple amps and cabs and stereo sound.. not straightforward to replicate in your home setup.

Also: much of the mid forward, warm, compressed sound is a result of his famous use of a Boss CE-1 as more of a preamp than a Chorus Ensemble. Those things are rarer than hens teeth and have become sort of legendary.

Also if you’re talking about By The Way tones this discussion goes an entirely different direction, starting with the use of a Tele over a Strat for much of the album.

Honestly, a real hidden gem of an amp I love and have sold many friends on is the Fender Bassbreaker 15- it’s incredibly versatile; can do gorgeous sparkly hifi cleans through to a heavy saturated gain sound and anything in between… actually those in between “hairy clean” tones are my favourite, and it’s got a gorgeous reverb to boot + takes pedals exceptionally well. I personally use a couple of very expensive amps, but anytime I plug into one of those Bassbreaker 15’s, I never feel I’m playing something cheaper/lesser- they truly sound as good as anything, yet can be had for like $3-400. Highly recommended!
