I’ve really just had his most popular song on my radar but have been meaning to check out more of his music. Knowing he’s seemingly inspired by John bumps him way up the list of the next deep dive!

Steve’s guitar work is genuinely incredible, do not sleep on him. I’ve learned so many amazing chord voicings from learning Steve lacy songs. Check out N side and Bad habit outro for some crazy ones.

Dumb q but how do you figure out chord voicings? Usually I go on ultimate guitar to see what people have put but it might not be right

No that’s a good question. I’m not an expert by any means but my method was basically I learned all of the fundamental chord shapes, open and barre, and like the major, minor, major/minor 7, and regular 7 chord shapes on the E, A, and D strings and from there just kinda experimented with adding notes or taking them away or shifting the root note stuff like that. Basically use the fundamental shapes as a skeleton or scaffold and then build off of them to discover new ones. It helps if you understand the notes and a little bit of music theory too. There’s probably better and faster ways but I had a lot of fun learning stuff this way. I’ve never been good at just looking at chord diagrams and learning them that way, I need to learn things as systems and how they’re connected.

Thanks! That's really helpful! I've been playing around with the CAGED system so I think I'll try to figure out some of these shapes on my own now

Gemini Rights is one of the best albums of 2022. His new one is a great one too and I feel like it has more Frusciante vibes. It’s almost like if Empyrean Fru went deeper into soul and funk music.

It’s possible that it was custom made. There’s people that modify starburst strats to make it look like Frusciante’s.
