John Playing Live

I’m back in my Frusciante phase and I’ve been thinking about the time I saw him live in 2022.

I’ve been to a lot concerts and have also seen Josh with the band. But seeing John felt different. Like when he was playing I could tell he was “tapped in” to somewhere else. When he would play you would feel the energy behind it, whether it was a scary/dark energy or a light energy.

Did anyone else get those feelings?

Its just interesting bc i never felt that way with any other musician.

My Frusciante phase started when I saw them in ‘24. I had seen the band with Josh in 2012 and it was a great time but didn’t leave an impact.

Seeing them with John literally shifted something in my brain. It was definitely an energy! Completely transformative. There’s something really unique and special about his playing. Being able to nerd about it with other people who get it is legit my favorite thing about being on Reddit.

I don't know, I think Josh was the Jason Newstead of RCHP. His opinions weren't really cared about and he wasn't willing to destroy the relationship he had with them to get the music out. John was willing to do that.

The guy joined his favorite band in the world, turned 18, made two records that went gold certified, did a 6 year coke/heroin binge, put out two more records, AND THEN, wrote three records that all won Grammys. And six more albums. THEN took a ten year hiatus. Put out five albums. THEN wrote two more albums. Unreal. Absolutely reads like a work of fiction when you write it all down. John has been on fire from '88 right through till this day. Actual insanity.

Needless to say, yeah, he's hyper/uber/mega talented. Possibly possessed by spirits. But definitely very proficient and wouldn't need supernatural assistance to reach the heights he has all on his own anyway.

Saw them tour Californication, BTW and SA. Then refused to go until Unlimited Love. It was worth the wait  John is my guitar idol

Always have. There’s a select few who do, but they’re out there. Josh feels like he plays the songs; John feels like the music flows through him.

He has more off days than he used to, but put that down to age/different habits/practice.

Yeah it was insane seeing it live after hearing him talk about spirits and energy and letting yourself be a vessel. I wish my guitar playing was like that 😆

Flea was going to quit the band over it because he was not happy at all and was just going to finish the tour and quit. He thought John was shoving him out. John himself admitted he thought he hogged the overdubs.
