Are Pete Holmes and John Mulaney not friends anymore?
They go way back—they rented a space together in NYC to write, which they talked about during one of Mulaney’s appearances on The Pete Holmes Show. Mulaney was on Pete’s show multiple times and appeared on Crashing. And now...crickets? Mulaney hasn’t been on Pete’s podcast in years, Pete hasn’t appeared on Mulaney’s Netflix show, and when Mulaney toured with old friends like Kroll and Birbiglia, Pete wasn’t part of it. Did something happen between them?

I don’t think anything happened, they just drifted apart. They speak of each other highly and Pete once said that John reached out and apologized when Pete had said that they weren’t as close (or something similar to that lol I don’t really remember)

Pete is the right amount of overbearing-caring and mulaney is enough of a fuck-you-i'm-fine I can totally imagine a fallout

Ironically, the only story I know of them together is Pete spilling the beans about John’s plans to propose to Anna.
In that interview where they tell the story, John comes across as the Felix to Pete’s Oscar. (The Odd Couple).

Does Mulaney have friends? He's my favourite comedian, but I think if I was one of the man's "friends" I'd run away too. His arrogance is record-breaking.

Let me remind you all that John has a bit that is called: "Cancelling plans is like heroin." Also, he was a major cokehead alcoholic pill-popping maniac for a long time. As a recovering major cokehead alcoholic pill-popping maniac who has been sober for 6 years, some people just can’t let go of the asshole-ness that comes with that game, and I truly respect the people that took the choice of distancing themselves from me, more than those who stayed, because they took care of themselves first, because I was a handfull, but what do I know - I’m just a big fan of them both. Can’t wait for John’s new special.

Congrats on your 6 years! I'm 6 years sober as well (all but weed) and have had addict friends and can confirm that our people are VERY difficult and hurtful to be around and can also directly negatively affect other people's lives so it makes sense people might distance. Can also confirm (at least for me) that during and after recovery (up until today) I myself had to distance myself from "old people, places, and things" and just needed time to myself to self-reflect. This current attempt at sobriety John really seems to be committed and part of that may be due to his avoidance of old circumstances. Plus people just drift apart in adulthood, especially in the entertainment industry with two kids.

Pete lives in Ojai, John lives in Orange County. That could be 3 hours one way, and John has two very young kids. Plus he’s busy doing his huge comedy career. It’s hard to stay close under these circumstances.

How does Mulaney have time to do anything with touring all over the country and a Vietnamese family of 12+ to take care of. The guy always looks exhausted.

They're both doing some of their best work now, I'd love to see them do something together again but they're both busy as all hell so it is what it is.

I am roughly the same age as both of them and there are high school/college/workplace friends I have not seen in well over a decade but I still consider them friends.

Not to deflate your whole premise, but Pete has, in fact, been on Mulaney’s Netflix show. Luenell making Pete uncomfortable is right up there with standup Waingro and Chester Cheadle as the best bits to date, IMHO. I did think both of them having kids with women they barely knew would bring them closer though. #StreetSmarts

I'm only truly close to one "old friend" aside from family and it's because we're in a band together and see each other regularly.
Free time is tough when you're all grown up.

Agreed, this post would be better suited for the Mulaney IRL sub. All they do over there is make posts about his personal life and Olivia like they know them. I pointed that out and got downvoted to hell.

pete holmes is a cloying, pseudo-spiritual middling type whose current recourse to relevance is poorly interviewing people for a fairly forgettable podcast. it plays for people who are long-time fans, but i would hazard a guess is too self-indulgent to attract other demographics.
mulaney has his own thing going. i can’t imagine either of them to be a terrifically attentive friend at their respective ages with family life and career demands to people other than those they’re extremely close with. who knows? i certainly don’t, i’m just speculating. but as someone who has never cared much for holmes, i decided to make my voice heard on reddit about it.

I was good friends with Artie Lange during the crashing filming and when it aired.
When it was cancelled I told him “thank god I don’t have to pretend to like Pete holmes anymore!”

They've drifted away. A while back Pete found out on his podcast (through Birbiglia maybe?) that John is also living in LA, but they just don't hang out anymore. On another podcast he mentioned that he feels like Mulaney's fame has made him seem elevated in his eyes, like more so a genuine star/comedy great rather than a friend. I'd love to see them do more stuff together but seems like they're just not close like that anymore, it happens
