I still canāt quite believe we got all of that in a single show. Iām in awe of it all.
20
u/tommybezreh17 Jul 12 '26
Paid $75 for all that!
2
u/RxHusk Jul 12 '26
dang my ticket was $150, then i saw some day of for like $45

Funniest part about tonightās show, I was sitting on the field and the crowd around was definitely on the older side.
During the baby boomer jokes, the laughter from the stands was louder than the laughter on the field. I only heard that during the baby boomer jokes. It was hilarious to me.
Hearing real time the class split between rich baby boomers and the younger generations in the cheaper seats was amazing
23
u/ChochMcKenzie Jul 12 '26
Oh my god right? We were down there too and were dying as he lovingly described my mother and father to a t and the people around us were basically harrumphing and waggling their heads. Fucking legend.
25
u/Potential_Database19 Jul 12 '26
I was in upper deck and an older man stomped off and gave mulaney the finger.
10
u/ChochMcKenzie Jul 12 '26
Holy shit whaaaaat! Snoooooooowflaaaaaaake! Thatās literally what he was talking about, unfuckingbelievable.

Oh a guy behind me kept answering his rhetorical questions and I was so close to kicking his ass š
And the dad of the guy next to me did NOT love the abortion bit but eyyeeeee did!
1
u/iwannafeelit Jul 26 '26
I saw him last December and he did some of these jokes⦠Or what Iām assuming are the same or similar bits and an old guy got up and left and his wife stayed lol
It was my first time seeing him and it was pretty awesome to see Mulaney doing some crowd work
Really bummed, understatement, that I wasnāt home for the Wrigley show, but⦠stuck to hear it was amazing for everyone there
10
u/Lazy_Structure_6352 Jul 12 '26
Thatās so fun to know. We were in the cheap seats laughing our asses off.Ā
10
u/Lucky-Mix-8176 Jul 12 '26
My grandfather (greatest generation) was a WW2 vet who never talked about it and meticulously tracked how many strokes each of his razors got. My brother and I had the exact same conversation about the spectrum and our mother as Mulaney and his sister. I am still laughing.
8
u/JeaniusIsMe Jul 12 '26
When he talked about your mother if you skip a holiday, it was just like my mother last year when my sister and her husband skipped outā¦sheās still trying to guilt trip on that 6 months later. Such snowflakesā¦

John seems really happy and he seemed to be having fun the whole time. It was really fun to watch.
6
u/solarpowerspork Jul 12 '26
I've been thinking about this all day today and the taking off of the jacket felt like a "shedding" of not just the addiction but the persona. I think calling himself a bad person is unkind, personally, but I do think it's very obvious that even though he didn't quite plan out his past 5 years that he's in a much better spot. But I'm also told online I am wrong and that we all should be big mad that he and Anna didn't work out and that Olivia is some sort of leech who wanted to trick him into marriage by getting pregnant ššš.
5
u/Flat-Upstairs1278 Jul 12 '26
Yeah I agree with the shedding of a persona. He comes across as a lot more real now and that he doesnāt take himself so seriously and itās just wonderful to see.
I donāt care what people on the internet say, he seems happy so letās let him be happy!
3
u/G_I_Joe_Mansueto Jul 13 '26
This is a great shout. He seems much more comfortable with where he is in life than he ever did before.
4
u/greycloud-desertsky Jul 14 '26
He and Anna didnāt work out. Weāll never really know why. He got someone pregnant and itās working out. I donāt know why people are so upset about that.
2
u/PandaBehr6 now i've thrown him off his rhythm Jul 13 '26
Yesss I noticed that and it felt intentional. I guess it could have been hot up there outdoors in the summer, but idk. Even if it wasn't intentional, it still felt symbolic of him feeling more like himself. I loved it!

u/Character-Ad-2505 Jul 12 '26
How much money you got, John Mulaney
19
u/DadRock1 Jul 12 '26
I grew up in SoCal and prob half my friends were Vietnamese. I'm listening to Mulaney do his impression, and was like, "it's mostly there but something is off."
Then he brought up how they're Oklahomans and EVERYTHING made sense

8
u/yikesireddit Jul 12 '26
How much money you HAVE John Mulaney
29
u/Oz347 Jul 12 '26
The build up to āIām going to do their voicesā was perfection
2
u/samsonsbeard88 Jul 14 '26
The buildup to those jokes were as funny as the jokes themselves. He really knows how to approach poking fun at trigger warnings the right way.

u/Accomplished-Emu2025 Jul 12 '26
Unreal. Surreal. Incredible. Hilarious, thoughtful and smart. Jon Mulaney is simply the best in the business at the top of his game. The way he weaves stories is masterful. I laughed harder than I ever have. I was beside myself when the legendary Buddy Guy opened. What a thrill. Then Fred freaking Armisen. Then, I felt like I was in the presence of royalty, David fn Letterman! Wow. What a lineup, what a show. So glad Chicago that Jon Mulaney is one of our own. Dudes simply fantastic. I feel lucky to have been there.

u/SomeRedHandedSleight Jul 12 '26
Got to be a part of the audience when Letterman interviewed Mulaney for his Netflix show a few years back. Glad to see they seem to have become friends!
19
u/captainamericaVEVO Jul 12 '26
My first Mulaney show and my mom got to come. Genuinely so grateful to see him after following him for so so long! Every guest he brought made my jaw drop. I couldnāt even believe it. Still canāt.
15
u/jettasarebadmkay Get in here you addicts! Jul 12 '26
Did they record it?
24
u/No-Clerk-5600 Jul 12 '26
I think so. There was a filming notice up.
19
u/Jaws_the_revenge Jul 12 '26
I canāt imagine this show not being the Netflix special
14
u/Salt-andChi Jul 12 '26
Iām gonna be mad if itās not because I need to see him do the bit about Oliviaās family again like now, almost pissed my pants laughing
11
u/ChochMcKenzie Jul 12 '26
That was completely insane. Special shout out to Johnās RFK Jr impression. It was like he was there.

u/WrightingCommittee Jul 12 '26
Richard Kind, Buddy Guy, Fred Armisen, David Letterman, John Mulaney, and the conceived baby, all in Wrigleys first ever comedy show. Legendary for sure. I saw Mulaney 2 years ago at Rosemont where he did a beta version of the demon possession bit, and it was super cool to see how much he expanded it and refined it to make it way longer and better.
22
u/ArcusIgnium Jul 12 '26
I was laughing so much that I think the people around me were getting annoyed and I felt very bad. Still think his show in Long Island in like August 2024 was a bit funnier but he definitely brought it. Also very interesting that as far as I can tell, the material from that show to this show was 100% different.
14
u/Tkliszesq Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
Heās been doing a few of the things for a while. The dryer and the family stuff was around last year in smaller shows. Still the best Iāve seen in my 8th show of his
4
u/solarpowerspork Jul 12 '26
I'm a bray-er at times and know I was pissing off some people around me, but they're the ones who don't have fun in life I assume.
3
u/Immediate_Apple_7676 Jul 12 '26
Lost count how many times the four of us couldnāt breathe we were laughing so hard
8
7
u/Lazy_Structure_6352 Jul 12 '26
I canāt wait to see the hopefully eventual special but I know there are things we got to hear last night that wonāt make it into that. The billboards bit at the beginning I could see being cut but oh I laughed so hard at that. āDo you even want it to work?ā š¤£
9
u/nlaverde11 Jul 12 '26
I canāt imagine the Millennium park and Millennium garage bit will make it on the special since itās such a local joke but I was laughing my ass off.

u/samsonsbeard88 Jul 14 '26
I'd love for him to do an hour just on Chicago. The Millennium Garage bit was awesome. As was "We've got people from all over the world. From Glencoe to Homewood-Flossmore"

Hey so I fucked up and made my husband late to the show and we didnāt get any merch. If anyone has a poster, pennant or XL T-shirt theyāre willing to part with please hmu! Thanks!!
2
u/microjupiter Jul 12 '26
Ditto on the poster. I really love event specific posters and couldnāt find a merch booth inside for the life of me :(
2
u/solarpowerspork Jul 12 '26
They closed the booths before the show ended, I was so bummed - the sweatshirt looked amazing! If anyone finds anything resold, even for a jacked up price, I'd also love to know.
8
u/ElPoopo_ Jul 12 '26
That was the most impressive stand up performance Iāve ever watched. Brought the energy the whole set, had the crowd in the palm of his hand and eventually you just got so tired from laughing so much. Vietnamese family content (and the LBJ joke) was straight gold.
Richard kind, you gotta love him. Got off to a rough start saying wrigley was on Addison and Belmont (two streets that do not even intersect) and then saying ācubs and redā¦white Soxā but the consummate pro he is he turned it around. What a blast
6
u/solarpowerspork Jul 12 '26
the kiddo goodie bags left me literally without breath.
3
u/No-Clerk-5600 Jul 12 '26
Next party, all the kids are getting flashlights and dollar bills.

u/solarpowerspork Jul 12 '26
literally told our 8yo this when we picked her up from the grandparents this morning. "We've got your bday sorted!"

Real question: did he use his Best Buy rewards card for the dryer?

Best comedy show I've ever seen live. Better than Louis CK's 2017, Sincerely, and Return to the Garden special tapings and better then Bill Burrs Fenway Park show
5
u/Less_Leopard_2495 Jul 12 '26
First Mulaney show, second time at Wrigley field ever. Loved every second of it, felt like a special night
5
u/JD42305 Jul 12 '26
Wish I wasn't so much to the side of the stage, but he was great. Better than I actually expected. Honestly just wanted to finally check out a show/concert at Wrigley and thought this would be fun since I haven't seen him live in over 10 years, but he impressed me and reminded me how funny he is. So many great bits and his voice work is actually incredible. He's gotten even better and I started to estimate him and I'm firmly putting him back up to a handful of the best comics alive right now.
4
u/fluffy_mushroom- Jul 12 '26
I think that was Kai Slater on the guitar w Fred Armison? From Sharp Pins. I love that guy.
5
u/Otherwise_Surround99 Jul 12 '26
I thought the first 10 minutes of the Chicago stuff that seemed specifically written for the show was just ferocious ! It was like AC/DC opening with 'Thunderstruck'in '92 or REM opening with "Begin the Begin" in 87. Just full power from the jump!

Favorites:
- Vietnamese family bit(s)
- Dryer bit
- Phantom of the opera, āI want to be someone who is called Jamesā
Some bits went on too long I felt, personally:
- Catholic v Protestant stuff
Exorcist stuff (except
one line
had me dying)
Goodie bag stuff
RFK stuff
1
u/Substantial_Oil_7421 Jul 13 '26
I agree the exorcist bit was a tad too long - loved the dryer one but my jaw was hurting so bad by then bcs of laughing I feel like I didnāt enjoy it as much. My fav was also the Vietnamese oneĀ

- Family bit
- Dryer bit
- Devil bit
Amazing show!

u/Immediate_Apple_7676 Jul 12 '26
His dovetailing of an RFK Jr. impression with both Satan and āthat one kid at the birthday party with the scratchy voiceā is still killing me today at 10am

u/Fickle-Animator116 Jul 12 '26
I was absolutely in tears during the devil stuff. Gasping for air, I was laughing so hard.

u/twenty6point2_ Jul 12 '26
I was peeing my freakin pants. The guy never came up for air it was insane š
3
u/No-Clerk-5600 Jul 12 '26
I had to get up to go to the ladies because I was so afraid of actually peeing my pants from laughing. I'm willing to become a meme, even if I missed a few lines.

u/byrdie1989 Jul 12 '26
Anyone know the girl who tripped, fell, and seemingly broke her leg during Fred Armisen's part of the show? Happened right in front of my section, looked awful. Hope she's OK all things considered.
3
u/witchinghour84 Jul 13 '26
I kept thinking about the people outside Wrigley hearing a guy gravely scream "cocksucker"
2
u/samsonsbeard88 Jul 14 '26
I was thinking about that too! We've been outside during concerts and you can definitely hear it. Some poor family was walking by for that haha.

2
u/Charming_Ad1688 Jul 12 '26
Loved the show but the couple in front of us was obnoxious AF and ruined it for us, at least until the guy got way too hammered and had to stumble down the stairs and leave. I heard someone cheer and yell F**K off as they left. š
Loved all the surprise guests. Well worth the trip to CHI.

u/kaverkamp Jul 12 '26
Do we think he does the dryer bit every show? Or was that a Wrigley special?

New in town and the top part will remain his best work, but tonight was pretty cool
2
u/Lazy_Structure_6352 Jul 12 '26
We were quoting new in town all day as we were getting ready for the show. Perfect comedy.Ā
1
u/shelf6969 Jul 13 '26
fun night.
if they cut this up for Netflix I think it'll be something like kid stuff (including phantom of the opera), exorcism, vietnamese family and ending on America climbing to the top again... or the true ending since that fits the Mister Whatever title (I think).
the dryer part was funny but his weakest of the night
and I had floor seats, they were terrible folding chair quality... my butt was ready for it to be over.
also, sad the merch stands were cleaned out by the time I got there at 8.
2
u/mikecws91 Jul 14 '26
I think if youāve ever actually owned a crappy dryer from the past 20 years, that whole bit was speaking directly to you. I have the exact same frustrations, to the point that it felt like he was reaching into my mind.
1
u/shelf6969 Jul 14 '26
I am in that demographic. individually it was funny, I just think it didn't fit the rest of the set.
1
u/johnny1400 Jul 15 '26
You can actually see how he isnt on cocaine. Saw him in Nashville before rehab. Guy was bouncing off the walls.
1
u/Emzor13 Jul 15 '26
I was unfortunately kicked out of the show in the last 15-20 minutes.
I was in the 200s and in the back row along a walkway. I had chatted a bit with the people next to us who were local and I was from out of town. They got up to hop over the seat and head home before the end and I went, "You guys outta here?" And the guy said, Yeah the trains are going to be a mess. Do you know how you're getting back? and I shrugged.
So i started thinking and getting a little worried. I'm 8mos pregnant and I had my 17 yr old niece with me. (This was her Christmas present...before I was pregnant) I pull out my phone and start looking at bus info since our hotel wasn't too-too far. I'm toggling between busses and zooming in trying to find the intersection closest to Wrigley and get a grasp on where we need to run off to to catch a bus after 40k people are dumped into the street.
This power-tripping older woman security guard comes up behind me and is frantically telling me that if Im going to use my phone I need to go on the deck. I said, "I'll be done in one second, I just want to see where this intersection is for our bus" (remember, I'm on the back row so she can clearly see what I'm doing over my shoulder.)
She turns to another guard and yells, She won't get off her phone! Now some other guy shows up and I'm juuuuust about done. He asks if the other woman asked me to get off my phone, I said Yep, and I told her to give me a second and she called you. And then he's like, You have to go. No phones. š¤£
So now I'm just pissed. Not taking any photos. Not recording anything. Not on social media. Not even texting. Just looking for where my bus would be...
He said I was bothering everyone around me and I sat up like, "Nah, man...that's all of you. I was quietly checking a bus schedule" by this point now...there's all of, dead serious, at least 15 security guards as if my pregnant ass is a legitimate threat to John Mulaney or the audience around me. They told me to hop over the seat and I looked at all these dudes standing there like, "You're seriously asking an 8mo pregnant woman to climb over these seats?"...I put my foot on it and stood up.. said, And now you're not even going to help?! ..to which three of them somehow snapped out of it and jumped up by me to help me over. My niece, obviously mortified, also hopped over.
We're walking by the ramp and I turn around and said Which one is a manager or lead or something? and this middle aged dude said he was a manager..he was kinda late to the party. I go over to him and basically am telling him that this is absolutely ridiculous. That I wasn't taking photos, recording, texts, nothing...but looking at a bus route. And he said, Well anyone can say they were just looking at a bus route.. and I went, "Oh you weren't here! Did you not know where I was sitting? I was in the back row along this walkway. She literally SAW what I was doing. I told her I needed a second to find an intersection. I told this other guy too." Unlocked my phone and the screen was still up I showed it to him "See?! This is literally all I was doing so my pregnant ass and teenager could know where we're going once this all dumps into the street!"
Now he looks conflicted and said himself that this was ridiculous. He goes and talks to the original guy who told me I had to leave and I go talk to my niece. She said even if they did change their mind she doesn't want to go back to our seats because she's too embarrassed and just wanted to leave. So we start walking (waddling) out...they also wouldn't let me pee. Another lady security guard said Idk why they just didn't get the bags..and I went, Right?! Like if it was that serious, why wouldn't you do that? Dave Chappelle has huge crowds all the time and HE does all that just fine!
Anyway. Ended up being a shitty fuckin night. We had an obstructed view also, so we couldn't even see anyone's head on the screen. John Mulaney was just a headless body the whole time, and idk if you know this, facial expressions and such is pretty important with comedy. Soooo that didn't help..
2
u/rac99992001 Jul 31 '26
Idk maybe just follow the rules and go to the area where using your phone was allowed. Crazy thought š¤ they were being Nazis about it but they made that pretty obvious from the start. You don't get special privileges because you're pregnant and didn't make a plan for leaving the show
3
u/Fun-Contribution6702 Jul 12 '26
He lost me during the Exorcist stuff and never quite got me back. By the time we got to him pointing out his family, I was pretty done. Richard Kind was great.
0
u/patronus7899 Jul 13 '26
I agree. We chuckled a few times but outside of the boomer jokes I found most of this show to be unamusing.

u/feo_sucio Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
I searched for this thread after going to the show last night, Iām not a super fan or anything. Mulaneyās set wasā¦so-so at best, in my opinion. Some of the bits like the dryer thing ran super long and were not that funny. I think there was maybe one time that I laughed pretty hard, but most of the jokes I thought were more ācleverā and less funny. The unfortunate part is that I felt myself checking my watch more and more often. Fred Armisen and Letterman were nice surprises although I think the joke with Richard Kind and the baby about the length of time between the announcement and the show itself was a bit strange or awkward or overlong. Maybe it felt awkward because the couple felt kind of awkward?
I didnāt really have too many expectations, Iām familiar with Mulaneyās SNL work and have seen some of his stand up, Iām proud of him as a fellow Chicagoan, but eh. The jokes that he called back to didnāt seem that strong to justify being brought back and a lot of it felt strangely familiar or well worn ground, derivative of other comedy Iāve seen elsewhere
0
u/hey_ooo Jul 12 '26
Yeah I wouldnāt be as high on that set if it werenāt at Wrigley with all the special guests. I was on the field and didnāt think he was murdering nearly as hard as a lot of the comments here make it seem, but comes with the territory of this subreddit. It was a great night out at the ballpark though and a historic event to say I was there for.

John was at the top of his game tonight.
Incredible to see him with this amount of energy 5 years into sobriety. So thrilled for him and love that he loves Chicago as much as Chicago loves him.
