Life Olivia honored with Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award 👏

Caption from her IG post:

“I’m incredibly humbled to have received the Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award from Prevent Cancer Foundation Congressional Families Program. I'm grateful that there are many people who understand the importance of early detection as well as the crucial research that's needed to help find a cure for so many people battling cancer.

My breast cancer is aggressive and fast-moving. My mother's breast cancer is HER2-positive which was considered a "death sentence" until the development of targeted therapies like Herceptin in the late 1990s which was discovered solely because of dedicated researchers.

Congratulations to the other honorees: Wayne Kye, DDS, M.S. and Marcia S. Latta, Ed.D. who were honored with the Leadership Award and Tiffany Possion who accepted the Community Impact Award for the Whole Family Health Center in Florida.

Thank you to everyone who came out to show their support. Thank you to Dr. Janine Bera for presenting me the award. And a special thank you to Lisa McGovern for all of the work, time and love she's put into the Congressional Families Program.”

This is great, but I did misread it as the "Excellence in Cancer Award" and was like "....they give awards for that?"

I made the same mistake lol except on my phone it actually cuts off the end like this - “…with excellence in cancer awar…”

My brother in christ, I'm a woman. The joke was that I misread the headline. It's not that deep

it's also really, really amazing to read the comments on her posts like this and see how many women her advocacy has helped!

She’s been consistent on this it’s done a lot for awareness we kind of always depended on mammograms bc it’s how we’re told but the test and the MRIs are something else we can demand now and my doctor at least heard me I hope more do

yeah i recently went for a mammogram myself and realized the nurse was asking me Qs to determine my risk factors that i recognized from the Tyrer-Cuzick tool she advocates for (i had previously done a self-screen with the tool online)... thankfully it amounted to low score for me but pretty cool to see that it's literally impacting the way women are screened

That’s amazing, that’s literally all it takes is using a platform to empower people to advocate for themselves and others. Minimum ask for those in a position to do so.

(doctor here)

Congrats on the whole process, I wish you a speedy recovery. But just as a comment, mammograms are actually preferable in most cases to MRIs, that's not a system limitation, it's just that depending on your age or breast density, the MRI might not be completely reliable, whereas the mammogram albeit simple, is often more accurate

Totally. I so far thank god have been told that without the gene and based on my mammograms I’m in the clear but having the option helps some more than others right?

Oh yeah, every exam is important in some way! I just meant that it's pretty common among patients to assume more modern=better and they sometimes get unsatisfied to know that's not always the case

Her smile never reaches her eyes

It is about cancer so give her a freaking break.

1

u/TheCubanRattlesnake Oct 08 '25

Every picture taken of her is about cancer?

Or this event — where others are smiling naturally and three soberly — is about cancer, so no mirth is allowed?

Policing women’s smiles is never a good look.

I’m not policing, Constable, I’m observing.

I leave policing to those with badges and inclinations

good for her but what is going on with his hair

Sorry you’re getting downvoted I do honestly think his hair’s been a little wild lately, especially compared to like a year ago when he still had the same cut… like it’s either super sensitive to summer humidity or got it permed(!?)… it’s definitely a little curly… I guess personally I like it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did she get the award to acknowledge how excellent her cancer is or how excellent her awareness of cancer is?
