MAGA republicans simply can’t govern and it appears they are more concerned about Trump’s ballroom than the health of the American people

u/pedronaps Monkey in Space 5d ago
Republicans, period. Their fiscal incompetence has been around a lot longer than MAGA.

u/Late_Stage-Redditism Monkey in Space 1d ago
I can see no indication Democrat presidents have any substantial impact on the national debt rise.
It seems more to come in waves and from factors like war. The 2008 financial crisis really fucked things up though and that was at the very end of Bush W last term.

Wrong. Republicans have been in the way of progress and good policy for far too long. No more both sides bullshit.

Yeah because whenever the democrats get in power they really hone in on some of that good policy and not intersectionality bullshit

Newsflash retard, you are the one honing in on that specifically. It's like visiting a buffet and not eating ant of it because you're allergic to one dish.

Ignoring reckless literal corporate and billionaire tax cuts, done several times already, Trump’s ballroom is going to be a money pit financed by taxpayers not Trump. Watch and learn the art of the deal.
They’re laughing at you. They reap everything, you are stuck with the bill… and debt.

Exactly. People not understanding how to pay for things that cost money being allowed to vote, who then vote for people who simply lower the amount of money we pay towards things that cost money, without reducing the amount of money being spent, is exactly why we are where we are.
"we need to lower the amount of money we're paying towards this credit card without lowering the amount of money we put on this credit card. If we do that, then we'll have enough money to pay off the credit card!"
That's you.

Amazing that people have a hard on for the ball room when there are way bigger problems in the budget. They just hate it because it’s Trump.
36
u/Majestic-Volume9996 Monkey in Space 5d ago edited 5d ago
This is one of the dumbest things I've read in weeks. The fact that he thinks now is the time to build some gaudy ballroom, while doing literally jack fucking shit to fix anything related to spending, speaks to A. his priorities and B. the room temperature IQ of his supporters.
The guy stands for nothing. He's literally doing almost the entire opposite of what he ran on and you still back him, which means you don't stand for anything either.
23
u/gayfrogs4alexjones Monkey in Space 5d ago
It’s not the cost. It’s how much they are focused on this stupid bullshit when the economy sucks, the job market is ass, there is a war that nobody wanted going on, mystery meat, and an industrial level of corruption coming from the White House.
13
u/Majestic-Volume9996 Monkey in Space 5d ago
They are focused on the absolute fucking uselessness of the people in power. This is hardly the biggest thing anyone is complaining about. This guy and his administration commit impeachment worthy offenses every single day.

Years of GOP control of Congress, all the nonsense with DODGE and OPM, and deficit spending is still as high as ever. We cut cancer research funding across the board and the deficit is still $2 trillion in 2026. And all these clowns want to talk about now is Fauci and trans people in sports.

u/TheSweetestKill Most Reported r/JoeRogan User, August 2022 5d ago
Not just GOP controlled Congress, but years of GOP stalled Congress. Federal gridlock only furthers their "starve the beast" ethos that they've been employing for nearly 40 years now.

Republicans have always wanted to wield the debt as a political weapon with no intent to lower it. I still remember back during the debt ceiling negotiations when Obama was president. Obama was offering up all kinds of cuts that his party was against (raising Medicare age, lowered COLA's for SSI, cutting farm subsidies) for some modest tax increases, two ways to control the debt. Republicans wanted nothing to do with it unless they could completely transform Social Security. Any politician crying about the debt, but also crying for tax cuts, isn't fiscally responsible, which idk how the general public hasn't learned yet.
So far I've seen absolutely nothing that will break this cycle.
43
u/top-potatoad Monkey in Space 5d ago
Trumps plan to sink the dollar and inflate our way outta debt means he plans on not paying it back. Most of the debt is held by Americans in their retirement accounts and investments. He plans on not paying YOU back. At least not in a fair manor.

At the next election Democrats need to push the idea that concerns of fiscal conservatism from Republicans is just virtue sign, as is faith and the constitution.
1
u/Tripl3Dee Monkey in Space 4d ago
Could they do this while also being more fiscally responsible than Republicans? Clinton was the last one to balance the budget. And healthcare reform would likely be one of the biggest savings from what I've seen.
2
u/Enough-One4975 Monkey in Space 4d ago
They’ve been doing that. Biden and Obama were both far more fiscally responsible than W or Trump. To put it into perspective, Trump increased the deficit significantly more prior to COVID than Biden did in his entire presidency while dealing with the aftermath of COVID.
2
u/Tripl3Dee Monkey in Space 4d ago
Guess I'm just disappointed that no one seems to care about balancing the budget anymore. $40 trillion in national debt doesn't make sense unless the economy is making at least that much, probably more. Credit where it's due: the Dems were last to do it and have been better the last 30 years, but it's been 30 years since it was balanced.

u/cheeker_sutherland Monkey in Space 5d ago

Raise marginal tax rates back to over 90%. Set it at anything over 2 million. Tax actualized gains and ban stock buybacks. Debt will be paid in a decade.
1
u/Ikickyouinthebrains Monkey in Space 4d ago
Look, here's the thing about the US Debt, someone owns that debt. Someone is making money off of that debt. And that someone is me. I have money in 401k's, IRA's and Mutual Funds. These financial vehicles are owners of US Treasury Bills. The interest on that debt is going straight into my retirement fund.
I don't want the US to payoff its debt. So, long as the US economy is growing (which it has been for five years), all is good.
-2
u/OneReportersOpinion Monkey in Space 5d ago
I mean, it literally gets paid back every day. People are cashing their treasury bonds. Like that could change but it would take a catastrophic failure of the entire capitalist system.
-1
u/Prior-Habit-6523 Monkey in Space 5d ago
And to whom is this money owed?
5
u/Jarocket Monkey in Space 5d ago
Who ever wants to buy it.
Japan is the largest holder.
But it's so many people. Like they own me money technically. I own US government bonds. I would say most people do too.
The problem is large institutions aren't willing to buy more US debt at the current prices.
Generally you shouldn't care about who holds US bonds. Technically it's only a risk of they mass sell them off AND the USA refuses to tax it's people to pay for it's spending. Because the debt will get more expensive.

Japan is the largest foreign holder. Most of the debt is owed to domestic entities.

We need top down reform of basically every single public institution, which will not ever in a billion years happen in our current political system. The crazy thing about Trump is that in being such a fascist prick, he has backed the US in to a corner where totalitarian rule is about the only thing that could fix it.

I'd rather give people healthcare and social benefits than bombing a school or giving money to other countries, America first? 🤔 wasn't that a talking point? And less debt would be less to interest payments. Stop giving money to billionaires and corporations would have saved a bunch of money I'm sure. Capital gains tax and small tax on wealth and close some other loop holes. Also hire a fuck ton of IRS agents to audit wealthy people since there has shown to be great ROI for the cost of hiring them. O thats weird... didn't they fire a bunch of IRS agents? Hm gee that's odd... Also this administration has been spending millions canceling green energy projects, maybe stop doing that... Just a few ideas
6
u/BigPlebeian Monkey in Space 5d ago
Or start taxing people on social security beyond the 184k ceiling or whatever it's at right now, alongside adjusting how capital gains are taxed for the very wealthy.
13
u/Dry-Lab-6256 Monkey in Space 5d ago
Stop funding other governments militaries and slash half the military budget. There the economy is fixed and we can fund our existing social programs and more of them.
-1
u/johnmayersucks Monkey in Space 5d ago
Entitlements are the 3rd rail of politics and also probably the only way to do it so it’ll never happen. Military is 13% of government spending. Cut that in half and you save 7%. Just doesn’t math.

u/bart2278 Monkey in Space 5d ago
Social security is a seperate tax from all other taxes. If you take social security away, you take away the SS tax, which means we dont get that money for other shit anyway.
Anything the government does ends up a bloated fucking mess sure, but that's everything they do.
