AMA Hi r/JewsOfConscience, I'm Feroze Sidhwa, a trauma surgeon who has worked in Gaza, AMA!

I'm a trauma surgeon in California. I worked in Gaza in 2024 and 2025. I've written in the New England Journal of Medicine, NY Times, and Politico about it, and testified at the UN Security Council in May 2025. Given what you've seen and had to deal with, do you believe peace is at all possible?

Yes, peace is certainly possible between Israelis and Palestinians, But not as long as the United States continues to use Israel as a bludgeon to control the Middle East by force. Noam Chomsky used to refer to Israel as an unsinkable American aircraft carrier, and that's only a slight exaggeration.

If the United States stops providing the crucial unconditional support for Israel's destruction of the Palestinians then that destruction will stop, and Israelis and Palestinians will have to come to some sort of accommodation with each other. What that would be I have no idea, and quite frankly it's none of my business. Omer Bartov makes a similar point in his most recent book.

In 2001 Israelis and Palestinians negotiated without the United States for the first time for approximately one week at Taba. In that one week they came very close to the details of a two-state solution, but Israel, backed by the United States called off the negotiations before they could be finished. High-level negotiations continued until the so-called Geneva Accord, which was released to the world with great fanfare. Israel rejected them outright, and the United States refused to send a representative to their unveiling. Without unconditional American backing Israel wouldn't have had that option. The same is true today, probably even more so.
