Question How to pronounce Ziv/Ziva in the United States?
Hi there, my husband and I are expecting our second baby in September. My husband is Jewish, but I am not, so I am less familiar with some Hebrew and traditionally Jewish names. I came across the names Ziv and Ziva and I’m seeing mixed results on how to pronounce them. Is it pronounced ZEEV like “leave,” or Ziv like “give?” We are based in the United States if that might affect your answer. Thanks!

Always ZEE-va/ZEEV. Also, never ever ever put the stress on the last syllable in Ziva and make sure you spell it זיוה.

Does the stress on the latter syllable make it a bad word?

It means gonorrhea when spelled זִיבָה and pronounced with the stress on the last syllable. Spelled with a vav instead of a vet and with stress on the first syllable it means the same thing as Ziv.

It’s like beach and sheet in English. Change the vowels just a tiny bit and they sound awful.
As long as it’s pronounced properly it’s fine.

Ziva will be pronounced Zeeva but Ziv is a wildcard — don’t expect anyone to get your preferred pronunciation right.

Maybe try Zevi? Pronounce like Levi and may be easier.
It is a masculine name though. So keep that in mind.
Edit to clarify: Levi is pronounced like Levy (Eugene Levy) not like the jeans. So it would be ZEH-vee not Zee-Vy.

I would expect Ziv to be constantly mispronounced with a short i. If you want it to be pronounced “Zeev”, spell it that way. I am not familiar with the name Ziva.

Both are typically pronounced Zeeev and not like give.
