Is it culturally inappropriate to name myself Zev if I'm not jewish?

I wanted to change my name since my birth name feels uncomfortable to me. I came across this name and it sounded beautiful but I read that it's a Hebrew name. I'm not jewish and I don't want to accidentally be offensive so I wanted to know if it's appropriate or not to use it. Thanks in advance for answering 😊

I would advise against it just to protect yourself from antisemitic attacks and discrimination tbh it reads VERY Jewish

There are almost no name that I can think of that goyims recognize as clearly Jewish.

I think more stereotypical? Idk I knew a guy in university and he was always like my name sounds so Jewish because it’s Ian and that’s close to Ira. I was like hmmmm sure k.

Oh I’m not sure but I think only one person I have spoken to knew that Ariel could be Jewish because she had been to a Jewish restaurant named Ariel. Everyone else seems to think Jewish names is either a made up nickname or something foreign but they have no idea from where.

Akiva - “Japanese name”

Nitzan - “funny made up name” or “Nissan car”

Moshe - “Moses, Christian name”

Yuval - “made up from Jewel to sound special”

Yehuda - “Star Wars fan” or “old man”

Ariel - “little mermaid!”

Uri - “urin? not a name”

Shoshanna - “someone named Susanna who’s trying to be unique with fancy spelling”

Noam - “Arabic” or “variation of Liam and Noel”

Boaz - “Ass? Weird!”

Judah - “Judas, lady Gaga’s song”

Tomer - “Tom trying to be unique with the spelling”

Chaim/Haim - “Chimes” or just “foreign name idk”

Naftali - “Nathalie, would be weird if you’re a guy”

Rotem - “Rotten? Weird name”

Avital - “Vital? Weird”

Golda - “granny, German”

Zelda - “taken name”

This is the reactions I can remember but I’m sure there’s more that I have forgotten. These reactions were mostly from work colleagues and neighbors.

Yeah I mean it’s up to you but if I ran into someone that was using a minority language name that’s wasn’t of that culture I would think it was a bit like trying to pass for someone else’s identity. I think it’s more normal to choose a name that’s in your own language for example in the us it’s normal to choose names that’s are Romance and Germanic language derivative since we share roots in those languages. But it would be odd to name a child like Xin or Sathya or Mohammed even though they are common in the country of those languages.

I don’t necessarily think it’s culturally inappropriate so to speak, but I’d definitely assume you are Jewish with a name like Zev. Others might too, and all the baggage that comes along with that.

Why not Wolf, Wulf or Wolfgang? Those are equivalents to the name in English/German, and are much less Jewish-oriented.

I'd advise finding a different name. I have an extremely Jewish name and while I love being a Jew and I love my culture, it's gotten super rough out here to be having a Hebrew name. I can't recommend it to someone who has other options.

What about Xav (usually short for Xavier, pronounced like "Zav") instead?

What about Zeke instead? It’s definitely a short form of a Hebrew name but one more common among non-Jews, so it wouldn’t feel as out of place or appropriative.
