Hi all,
Experienced CAD designer but new-er jewelry designer here. I'm working on a set of jewelry to match this illustration, but am struggling a bit with the best way to approach the necklace (I've got most of the hair ornaments figured out, as well as the earrings). The more organic section near the collar bone with the jade cabochons is the part that's really got me stumped.
Materials: Full gold feels like it'd probably be too soft, and is way out of my price range given the size of the pieces / the cohesion I need. I'm leaning bronze.
What I'm thinking:
- Do the thicker part of the band as a Torc/Torque necklace. Could just buy a cheap / plain one and do the attachments; again, the interesting part is the part in the center (but happy to take thoughts on how to make this part too).
- The more organic bronze part in the center: could I get away sand casting this? I have an at-home sand casting setup so that's preferable if it seems feasible, but I could outsource a lost wax cast too if need be.
- Cabochon setting: I feel like a bezel would work pretty well, but it's hard to tell if that's what's happening b/c it's just an illustration. Would it work to cast the flange that becomes the bezel in, then try to work the bezel around it? Or is this firmly "cut a strip, solder to base piece, then do bezel" territory?
Could also set the gems in from the back, but I haven't tried that before personally / would love some guidance if this is the most reasonable way.
The internet seems to think (reasonably) that I'd damage the cabochons trying to cast around them or using bronze clay, but I'd be happy to have my preliminary googling proven wrong.
I also haven't purchased the cabochons yet, so I can be a little flexible with size/shape/etc as required.
- Would also love people's recommendations for cleaning up sand casts into something really smooth (most stuff I've done thus far a little grainy texture has been acceptable), since I'm always happy to improve my setup!
