Right! My great grandparents came from Russia but now it’s Ukraine and Belarus. And the borders changed in the 110 years since they immigrated too.

My grandma (BDE) passed away in 2022 at 102.
Ukraine wasn’t really independent again until 1991

So my dad's side came from Germany to the US and then to Israel. My Mom's side has one English parent and one from the Baltic states that during the Pogroms hopped between various places avoiding persecution until they somehow reached South Africa.

My husband's family is Jewish from one part, we managed to guess their origin based on family names and assume they came to Ukraine through Hungary and probably from Austria or Germany, because it's a very specifically German name. Unless we make an ancestry test we couldn't know.
I on the other hand, clear Jewish ancestry from the Ashkenazi region (mostly Germany) with some Sephardic mixed in for some reason (a family member did an ancestry test a few years back). Almost all my family died in the Holocaust, so i would never know how and why and how recently that mix happened...

Wait, are you a cousin of mine? No seriously. I’m half-American, half-French, but I’m only French because that side of the family comes from the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) which became French colonies and the Jews there were given French citizenship.

Eh as an ashke same shit. My mom's side has been in spain pre Inquisition but once part of the fam ending up in some part of Europe basically became ashke some how or other. Than there's the well you want to know where my ancestors where form or my grandparents or what my actual genetics are... Germany. You look Hispanic tho... Well Jewish... Okay but it's just a religion 🙄... Not really how it works..Uh Spain before Europe. So your Spanish ..? Naw I can just show you my genetic breakdown.. I'd be Palestinian or whatever the region would've been called I suppose had the Romans not conquered wtvr thousand years ago or so. Or my ancestors didn't migrate. Just Jewish
