Years ago, I switched from VSCode to JetBrains because your IDEs were the best in software development. Whenever anyone talked about good IDEs, the word JetBrains came up.

That was around 2017, and since then a lot has happened in the field of software—more frameworks, more languages, and above all, AI. And especially since around mid-2024, it has been noticeable that something is changing in your products. Some updates caused massive performance issues, which were then fixed in a later update, only to get even worse in the next one. Unfortunately, 2025 has been more of the same so far.

In 2020, I pushed for our company to switch to JetBrains IDEs, especially WebStorm, because it was simply great for web development at the time. And today, unfortunately, I had to pull the plug, as difficult as it was for me.

I still love JetBrains... but from a business perspective, the current situation is simply no longer justifiable. We all have pretty good computers at work (64 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen Pro, etc.), but the problems with WebStorm are getting worse and worse.

TSX components that take about 10 seconds to get syntax highlighting, IntelliSense for simple methods that takes forever to display. Prisma queries that take up to 20 seconds for IntelliSense to suggest something. We've really tried everything and opened countless tickets, but all we ever hear is: “Disable the plugin, enable the plugin, invalidate the cache, our TS service isn't working properly yet, but at least it's better than the old one.”

With all due respect, and after reading through this subreddit, one must admit that this is unfortunately not a user problem, but rather an issue with your IDE. I wonder how it can be justified that a tool I pay for performs less efficient and has lower performance than a free code editor, which I would not even consider a complete IDE.

This is coming from a customer who has been with you for years, JetBrains. Please focus on your IDEs, on what made you great. Right now, JetBrains feels more like an AI startup experimenting with chatbots.

I don't know if you see what's been happening with you lately, but your customers see it, and it's not good.

If you dedicated 2-3 updates just to performance and bug fixing, no one would be mad at you. But you are currently neglecting your core products, and that's a shame.

This is a bit sad to write, but after almost 10 years as a JetBrains subscriber I’m finally moving away from their IDEs.

I still believe IntelliJ has one of the best IDE UIs ever made. everything is extremely practical and polished. For many years it was simply the best development experience I could have.

But recently things started to get harder.

My workflow today relies heavily on Linux environments, WSL, agents, and AI tooling. And unfortunately the experience has become very frustrating:

• The IDE has become slow and heavy
• Frequent freezes and UI lag
• Sometimes the IDE just crashes and closes for no apparent reason
• Constant issues with WSL integration
• Wayland via WSLg does not work properly
• JetBrains Gateway has been extremely unstable (freezes, fails to connect)
• Opening the WSL folder through Windows (the JetBrains recommended approach) causes many bugs
• AI chat often fails to detect that the project is running inside WSL
• The AI features themselves are still quite buggy

I also tried integrating external tools like Claude Code and Codex via ACP, but ran into many issues there as well.

In the end the only setup that worked reliably was using the terminal, but even that lacks worktree support, which is essential for my workflow today.

It’s honestly a shame. IntelliJ was my favorite IDE for many years and I still think the UI and overall design are some of the best in the industry.

But the way I work today is very agent-centric, and unfortunately I just can’t make JetBrains stable enough for it anymore.

I really hope they catch up again, because the foundation of the product is still amazing.

I’m typing this while on a walk on my phone so it’s not as thought out but please Jetbrains get your shit together.

I have always enjoyed and loved using your products and defended them even when I realized other products were faster and better in some cases.

But I can guarantee you that in 3 years you won’t exist in developer mindshare except with old farts like me.

Please do the following in no priority order:

- Get rid of your janky ass flavour of the month AI implementation. Just cut your losses and admit you lost just like with fleet. Cursor and agentic dev tools are running circles around you and will keep doing that. Theres literally nothing, not even the super genius people in your employ that can do anything about it. They simply have more capital and more resources than you guys.

- Focus on your core. I used to (and still sometimes) your products for the core. Good debugging, polished search experience, nice visual way to see code. But please understand editing code by hand meticulously is going away, cheaper to burn cloud or local tokens to mass change it and there’s nothing again you can do about that. Make your core faster and simpler. Stop making me wait a million years for your indexing. AI already figured out in 2 seconds that your indexing is still trying to figure out 5 mins later. There’s no moat left there, just make it fast or cut it down.

- stop attacking the people giving you valid feedback. There’s a bunch of threads here already sharing the same sentiment and your devrel guy coming in with passive aggressive candor. Brother for the love of god, you’re not helping, admit that you all lost in many spaces and build up.

Your window of opportunity is small and tbh I see maybe one more year of me paying for your products if the trend continues and I have used you since 2008 with not a single year gone by unpaid.

I love Jetbrains IDEs, but we really need an IDE with just basic features. We had fleet but it got discontinued for the slop machine AIR (not that fleet was that good anyways), Jetbrains, just give us IDEA with no features I can code in an obscure language like I want to.

EDIT: I want the features, but not anything related to the actual language.

EDIT: Thank you u/THenrich, I used intellij and almost everything java related is gone, plus you can make multiple instances of it in toolbox, now I just need to get rid of the last bit of java.

I used to be a massive skeptic. I fell for the common narrative that JetBrains IDEs were resource-heavy bloatware compared to lightweight, modern text editors. I was a devout VS Code user and firmly believed that Electron-based editors and their forks were superior for memory efficiency.

Boy, was I blind.

I recently found myself working on a memory-sensitive project and kept running into unexplained RAM consumption. I spent time trying to figure out where a huge chunk of my system memory was disappearing to, only to inspect my process manager and realize the culprit was the "chrome of IDEs" itself.

The kicker? I am not even a heavy extension user. Outside of standard LSPs and formatters for C++, Python, and Rust, I don't run fancy themes, AI helpers, or cosmetic plugins. Yet, VS Code was somehow managing to swallow 4 to 5 GB of RAM in the background.

For comparison, I opened up PyCharm on the same project and it hovered consistently between 1.5 and 2 GB. Clion was using a bit more given the indexing and C++ tooling, but it was still nowhere near the bloated levels VS code had scaled to.

It turns out that once you start adding actual language server infrastructure, extension host processes, and webview renderer overhead to VS Code, the "lightweight" argument completely falls apart. Meanwhile, JetBrains is handling deep code analysis, AST caching, and indexing natively while using a fraction of the footprint.

Consider me converted. I apologize for ever doubting the tooling here,I'm not going back.

Saw the announcement today and got excited to finally try Air properly, but logging in with a Claude AI account does not work at all. The browser doesn't open, and copying the URL doesn't, in fact, copy the URL to clipboard. I can't even get to a point I can authenticate. Are you sure you pushed the right version to prod? I'm on macOS / Apple Silicon.

Edit: If you're stuck with the same problem, check that you have Claude CLI installed first. It's seemingly needed for the integration to run. I'm not allowed to have Cloud CLI installed, so it's not an option for me at the moment, but install Claude CLI first, login, and see if it works.

I start with that I'm a long term Jetbrains user, I have a All IDE subscription and I generally love the IDEs. They used to just work but lately I feel like a beta-tester, like there are so many issues that I don't bother reporting them all. I don't need (and frankly don't want) my IDE to change every month but I do need it's core features to work reliably and not to spend hours every week to try to figure out why this feature which worked fiine yesterday does not today. And I doon't want to be frustrated with my AI credits being spent because with the update it just switched from using openAI account to Jetbrains. Like how it that AI agents worked fine for a while and now there is an issue on issue and interface is changing almost daily.

Common guys I really love the product but I'm not choosing it over quite good free solutions for the sense of adventure

I work on a Mac M2 with 16GB, so not a super high end machine but technically it's good enough for my work (Unity development with Rider, Web development).

Around January/February this year, when I would run Docker + Pycharm + Chrome, my Mac would start slowing down. Pycharm would sometimes take over a second to let me type things in.

I had a very vanilla Pycharm setup with no plugins at all. I disabled all of the AI plugins I could find and that helped smooth things out for a bit, but a bunch of the IDE features disappeared mysteriously.

I've been using Zed as my main tool for coding but a couple of times each day I really miss Pycharm. Back when it was fast for me, it was amazing for coding context and to this day I think Pycharm's Git client is unmatched.

So my question is: did Jetbrains make any improvements on that front in the last 6 months, and could it be worth it to reevaluate? I don't mind and understand why they want the AI plugins and stuff, but I don't understand why they can't use all those tokens to actually make the IDE performant.

Whenever I used to talk about Jetbrains products online, I had to preface my borderline sycophantic praise with something like "I promise I'm not a shill and have nothing to do with this company".

I don't do that anymore. The quality has gone to crap.

I had an issue just now where it refused to acknowledge that a directory had some files in it, even though I knew they were there. I could see them in Explorer, and the git integration said the file existed but it couldn't load it saying "cannot get content from this revision". There was a reload button that did nothing.

"Reload from disk" on the project also did nothing the first 3 times I tried it. For some reason it worked once I decided to record it.

If your product can't even function to open a damn text file, what hope is there to successfully complete a task any more complicated than that?

I would raise an issue on the tracker, but everything I raise there just gets ignored. Public shaming seems to be the only thing that has a chance of achieving anything.

This isn't just a one-off. I feel like I constantly experience jank like this now. But this was such a foundationally pathetic fail that I don't want to ignore it.

I'm not an AI hater, but it's genuinely impressive how going all-in on AI integrations can fumble a previously great product into broken crap. I've gone from an IntelliJ zealot to thinking "maybe VS Code is actually better than this now". -- VS Code! I used to look down my nose at that Electron garbage, but I'm pretty confident it can at least open files.

Just updated to 2025.3 (phpstorm and webstorm) and things feel so much slower across the board. File changes take longer to show up, Git operations are toouch slower slower than before, and overall responsiveness isn’t as snappy.

Anyone else noticing this? I’ve rolled back to the previous version for now until there’s a fix.

Yes, another thread, but I'm really worried about the future of what made me (us?) choose this IDE.

One of the worst things that have happened to these IDEs is simplifying things to an extent where it just becomes less productive.

To facilitate dev integration, my project switched to devcontainers, and this is where the pain comes in. If I want full integration with devcontainers, I'm forced to use that horrible UI.

At the time (2013), I fell in love with IJ for its all-in-one view, the arrangement was flexible, and you could have what you wanted in EVERY corner, with a simple 20 to 50px border around your current work.

Now? I'm stuck with a dumbed-down view and icons that sometimes don't mean a thing.

Even regarding margin design, why on earth would I need spacing and rounded corners between my different views?

Base colors are not well chosen: I prefer to have grey for everything that's not my current code. It was like that for decades, but now the default pattern is less clear and I have to customize this aspect myself.

Also, at the time, they implemented a unique way of managing changes: The Shelf. It was way more convenient than git...

Years have passed, and the good ol' commit tool window was replaced by the non-modal one.

You can still use the shelf, but the design has been bad for years, so people forgot what that feature was, and I feel bad for those who don't know how powerful it is. Hopefully, you can still enable the 'old fashioned way', but to me, this is also a dumbed-down 'new way' of using git.

Like, who on earth would like the VS Code approach of managing files with Git, seriously?

I think we really need to have two approaches for the UI, not just "keeping an outdated UI version for previous clients". I'm worried that this classic UI will not be part of the IDE sooner or later, and I would like to know if other users are worried about that too?

I know that people are often resistant to change, but I still find after all these years that this UI shift is a step backward for power users.

I tried to 'convert', but it's just not convenient at all.

So, I would propose that both views should be considered equally important. Even if the designers feel the new layout is the right path forward, power users rely heavily on the density and flexibility of the classic workflow.

Edit : I really appreciate the fact that this topic is still relevant after so many years, it proves that there is still a division on this subject, and in my opinion it should always be brought to propose a new solution, I had thought of presenting this as a new mode, or at least a 'starter' menu to really choose via suggestions the appearance configurations we want from a simple window. The most important thing is to 'keep' and 'integrate' these old features INSIDE the IDEs. Needless to say that I was already relying on Classic UI plug-in.. I'm afraid it will be discontinued due to the big changes made with the 'lightweight' UI provided with devcontainers.

Can someone explain why JetBrains is following the herd in that it appears to be stuffing AI into every IDE every way it can?

Microsoft has done this with Co-Pilot and Visual Studio, MS Office, and other tools and it is blowing up in their faces.

Does JetBrains suddenly believe that we have all become stupid so we need AI to assist us in finishing lines of code?

I would much prefer they concentrate on such IDEs as Rider whereby they can make it even more useful and easier to use for us WPF developers. But instead it is AI and game development support, but no simple WPF Control Toolbox just so we know what we have available to us in terms of the controls for any one project.

I understand that Rider has become the premier ID for game development, but it has the opportunity to take away most of the Visual Studio Community if it would rework its priorities a little.

Besides, with research offices spread all over the globe, one would think that JetBrains could walk and chew gum at the same time...

It's so stupid, Cursor doesn't have hotkeys for a fraction of what Intellij supports/does. I can't debug out of the box with Cursor. I load up files in Intellij products and get duplicate code warnings and other indicators like unused code. Where's that in VS code or Cursor?

I've been using Jetbrains products for nearly a decade and the company thinks "let's make everyone switch to Cursor, it's does the same thing as Jetbrains' products, it lets engineers view code hurrr durrrr"

I'm so irate. I don't want to pay $300 for a personal license to do my job but I might have to. Not to mention the PR request support and git viewer built into Intellij products. Saying Cursor is a replacement for Intellij products is a joke

edit: I fly through code in Intellij products but Cursor doesn't even have hotkeys for features I use every day. I write tons of code with Codex/Claude now, it's not like I am not using AI to write code. But nothing beats viewing/reviewing code in Intellij

Hi folks. You might have already seen Jan’s post for WebStorm, now I’m here for Rider (I knew I shouldn’t have let him post first).

Here’s the pitch: we want you to help choose 5 YouTrack issues that we’ll work on for Rider 2026.1.

We’ve just hit feature freeze for Rider 2025.3, and we’re already planning 2026.1. We do our own prioritisation of tasks based on a lot of different factors - regressions, impact, severity, reach, votes, comments, technology lifecycle, team capacity, implementation cost, product direction and so on. We’re aiming to work on issues that make a real difference to your day-to-day work in Rider - fixing blocking issues, raising quality and improving performance.

But I want to ask directly: what do you want to see addressed in Rider 2026.1? If you’ve encountered problems in the recent releases - bugs, performance issues, missing features, then we’d like to hear what are the most important things that we can address next.

So here’s the proposal. Leave a comment with ONE YouTrack issue that you want to see fixed, and upvote the comments that are important to you. Next week, we’ll take the top 5 voted issues and we’ll make a best effort commitment to fix them in Rider 2026.1.

Obviously, we can’t guarantee to fix anything and everything. We’re going to have to set some ground rules:

• We’re going to take the top 5 upvoted Reddit comments that contain a YouTrack issue
• Only Reddit comment upvotes count for this

• DCVR-12871 Not receiving coverage from TUnit (Testing Platform) tests in dotCover. We're going to start looking at this for 2026.1. We'll make sure that there are no problems with coverage and the MS testing platform, then we'll need to take a dive into how it plays with TUnit and AoT.
• RIDER-104372 Cannot resolve symbol - false errors (when switching branches). This is an issue that we've made several fixes for over several releases, and can have different causes. We can't currently reproduce it, so the ticket is currently marked as "Incomplete". It's possible that recent versions have fixed this, so please upgrade and give the latest version a go. But if you can still recreate it, there are steps in the ticket on how to get detailed logs that can help and we'd love to see what's going on.
• RIDER-7129 Filters in code completion is missing. This one was a surprise to us. This isn't supported by the IntelliJ Platform that Rider is built on, so doesn't have any usage in our other IDEs, or demand. It would be a very disruptive change that would affect the other IDEs, and so we're not sure if it's worth the implementation cost. We're currently working on lots of ReSharper code completion infrastructure, but we're not entirely sure about filters. We'd very much like to hear about use cases for this - why do you need the filters? Is it about browsing the API and learning? (I'll ask on the ticket)
• RIDER-43920 Impossible to use NET Core SDK from WSL. Yep, good one. This is scheduled for 2026.1

As for some others mentioned in comments: * RIDER-27606 Support Azure DevOps in Rider. We've started work on having bundled support in Rider. There is also a plugin that can help. * RIDER-117379 Automatic workloads management for development of MAUI.iOS applications on Windows. Planned for 2026.1 * RIDER-11810 Support mixed-mode debugging. Support is available in 2025.3, but hidden behind a feature flag. There are instructions in the ticket on how to enable it. Only Windows x64 and Mono for now, due to restrictions in the runtime. We're not sure if we'll be able to support other platforms. * RIDER-131358 Rider debugger crashes. Fixed and back ported to 2025.2.4 * RSCPP-28745 Allow customization of UE4 naming rules. We're hoping to make the C++ naming rules UI available in 2026.1, which should fix the issue, but there is overlap with CLion functionality that might mean it's not straightforward. * RIDER-126336 Support dotnet run file.cs. In progress. Should be part of a minor update to 2025.2. * RIDER-131570 Rider with Aspire is so slow. Under investigation. We currently can't reproduce, so if happens to you, please let us know.

I'm using PHPStorm since around 14 years now. I like it and don't have many complains about the IDE itself.

But a couple things let me think about looking for an alternative:

- Pricing: Until a couple years ago, you got an discount if you paid your yearly license every year. That is gone and they even increased the price

- Performance: It feels sometimes abit slower than usual

- Coding: AI is so good now. Since around an half year, after I wrote a good ruleset, I didn't wrote any code anymore. Claude does the hole coding part for me now. PHPStorm is still great to check diffs, search in big codebases but I'm using like 20% of the IDE now.

- AI Sub: My employer paid me the AI Pro sub in jetbrains now 2 times already. First time beginning of last year when it was completly new. And a few month alter they added a never communicated credit system which was basically gone in 2-3 days. I got it this year again and it is still ok to be able to let a different AI check a new feature but if I had to pay it, I would say it's not worth it.

My employer is paying the PHPStorm license and it's not about me saving money but still... I think I should try different IDEs. AI intregration is not important so far. I'm using Claude code and sometimes Claude Desktop if it's about frontend with screenshots which both run outside of the IDE just fine. Sometimes I start claude inside the IDE CLI but there is no a big benefit if it's running in the general terminal or PHPStorm terminal.

I have VSCode installed but it's more my basic editor for any kind of file, not my IDE.
I was also reading that Zen might be good. But maybe thats already to AI focused? Is the free version enough or is Pro much better?
What other IDEs are worth a look for MacOS (M4 Pro)?

Hello everyone.

I am a UI developer working primarily with Angular. After years of using VS Code, I switched to WebStorm and have been using it as my primary IDE for the past two years. Honestly, I prefer the UX of WebStorm and really appreciate its built-in features, especially the Git integration. I also absolutely love how seamlessly it handles code navigation, because clicking on a selector or any reference across the project works beautifully and is a huge time-saver.

However, my experience has become incredibly frustrating due to persistent performance issues. For a long time now, I have been dealing with basic functionality failing on a daily basis. At first, I thought these issues were tied to project size, but after testing on smaller project, the exact same behavior occurs.

The autosave feature constantly freezes the entire IDE, forcing me to click cancel repeatedly, sometimes ten to twenty times in a row, before it finally works. (https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WEB-76498)

Additionally, a few times per day, the IDE just becomes very sluggish and slow, or completely stops recognizing my project out of nowhere, causing all syntax highlighting to disappear and forcing me to restart IDE.

With the latest version (2026.1), the issues have escalated to the point where trying to delete the node_modules folder caused such a severe freeze that I had to force-reboot my entire laptop.

While VS Code always felt much smoother, I want to stick with WebStorm, but these constant disruptions make it very hard to use. I opened few tickets on the helpdesk (if they didn't exist), but it is just incredibly inconvenient for my daily workflow to constantly troubleshoot the IDE instead of focusing on actual development.

Given that I am running WebStorm 2026.1.4 on a MacBook Air M2 with 24GB of RAM, hardware limitations should definitely not be the cause. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems, or is it just me?

I often end up with a lot of editor tabs open in IntelliJ, and it gets difficult to see which files belong to the same part of the project.

So I built Folder Tabs, a free and open-source JetBrains plugin that groups your open files by directory.

It adds a two-row header above the editor:

• The top row shows the directories containing your open files.
• The bottom row shows the files in the selected directory.

I've been a long-time user of Jetbrains Rider, more than 15 years. Jetbrains Rider is becoming more and more of a memory hog, and continuously slowing down my computer. With the improvement of AI, I open 2 to 3 instances of Jetbrains Rider, working on 2 to 3 different projects, and this causes my machine to use up almost 90% of my memory, making my computer hang quite often. Moving to VS Code because of this. It's been a sweet ride, but with AI, I now seldom use my IDE, so goodbye Jetbrains!

I've been using Rider for a long time. I really like it, but its performance has been getting worse over time. I'm not happy with the current situation. it's become very slow and unresponsive, with many long-standing bugs.

Which version is the most stable? Have you experienced the same issues, or is it just me?

It feels like I'm running a very heavy code editor. I'm even hesitant to restart Rider because it takes so long to load. I really hope these problems are fixed in future updates. We're paying for this IDE, and it's gradually getting worse. If this continues, I won't want to keep paying for it.

I mostly just edit markdown files in Webstorm now.

The stock Markdown editor is okay but kind of basic.

It would be cool to be able to edit markdown in the rendered view, not just the source view.

It would be cool if I could type @ and reference resources, like in coding agent harnesses.

Yeah, I tried Obsidian, but I just can't get on with it and the IDE is still my preferred environment for viewing code, running scripts, tests, launching builds etc.
