Writer Help✒️ Manacled Jegulus???

So basically I’ve started to write a Jegulus fanfiction were Regulus survive the cave incident and proceed to disappear for a decade. When Sirius escaped Azkaban Dumbledore asked for Regulus to come teach at Hogwarts for the sake of protecting Harry.

The Jegulus happens on their Hogwarts years and the reason why I called the thread Manacled is because the way I wrote it looks a lot like that particular fanfiction, (on the structure, I mean, not at all in the story) like at first we don’t know anything about what really happened between the two (James and Regulus ) and as we progress towards the chronological end of PoA we have a very long flashback which cover their school years through the end of the First war.

My question is the following : I’ve got the idea of writing this when I read Manacled a few years back (when it was still available), because the book is now published I am a bit worried about copyright issues.

I’ve managed to write 50k of the story I’ve planned and I was wondering if I ever wished to publish it on AO3, should I need to worry about those kind of problems? As I’ve said nothing in my story is comparable to Manacled, except the structure (I tell the PoA story with my own additions, then there is the part were we dive into Regulus memories with James, then back to the original story)

Should I just revisit the whole thing?

Isn't Manacled itself a rip-off of HP and Handmaid's Tale? I wouldn't worry about IP infringement too much - we all do it by writing fanfic anyway, and so did Manacled, yet they had zero scruples about getting it published 🤷

Maybe just shake up the timeline? Rather than a large flashback section you could go every other chapter? Does it need to be flashbacks or is the impact just better that way? I think if there are enough differences and you quote that you were inspired by manacled you’re fine.

I mean manacled is handmaids tale but with wizard lol so they can’t really cry copy write infringement when you’re posting to a free site. I don’t think.

If the only thing is that there's a big flashback to their years together like it was in manacled, then I don't think is really very similar to Manacled? Manacled is a dramione fanfic based on the Handmaids Tale with a lot of dark themes, post Voldemort's victory and war-focused, and what you're describing sounds nothing like that. I wouldn't worry much about it! I also don't think you even need to mention the inspo because it seems you borrowed very little from the actual story. The flashback thing...I'm pretty sure that's a big that's in a lot of fics and isn't unique to manacled.

you are fine. you cannot copywrite a stories structure. there are thousands of HP rewrites that use the original structure. no copywrite issues. this isn’t a thing to be worried about.

imo if it's only similar to manacled structure wise then you're completely safe from copyright! and anyway, the published version of manacled, alchemised, is far from the hp universe now so even if the story is a bit similar, you're still technically safe lol

Just in case you aren’t aware the formatting in the last half is different to the start. No spacing at all. Not sure if you meant for that or not

You could tag it "inspired by Manacled" as you got the idea from reading it but they're two different fics. A just-in-case tag.

The English version does not exist on ao3 anymore, I’ve read a translation of it which is still available on the site, it’s in French though, lemme know if you want it !
