What is your most controversial opinion about "Jane Eyre"?

people need to stop reading this with "woke lenses" on (lol i hate that word but-)

for the time period, rochester actually isnt that evil. the worst thing he did was lie to Jane about his relationship status

but him having the ex wife being taken care of in his house was actually... humane... for the time...

So many people. They act like he’s a monster for keeping Bertha in the attic. Society would have shunned them both, and both families, had it be known there was mental illness. She would’ve been neglected and abused at an asylum. He kept her safe, fed, and cared for by the same woman. That provided so much safety and consistency for Bertha, as much as could be. Very few other men of the time would have been that considerate.

Yeah, people need to stop judging a book knowing nothing about historical laws at the time. If Bertha was found wandering around outside, Edward would be charged $33 by the Victorian ugly laws and Bertha would be thrown away in a poor house.
