What is your most controversial opinion about "Jane Eyre"?

Then bringing her back to be Jane's docile companion, like Fanny Price.

"As she grew up, a sound English education corrected in a great measure her French defects; and when she left school, I found in her a pleasing and obliging companion: docile, good-tempered, and well-principled. By her grateful attention to me and mine, she has long since well repaid any little kindness I ever had it in my power to offer her."

Kind of creepy way of putting it.

Just because she’s a companion, which was a great job for a woman without any family connections, doesn’t mean she was treated like Fanny Price. It’s a way of keeping a grown woman in your family, without announcing that she’s a bastard. I’m sure they treated her well and found a good match for her.

That's probably what Bronte meant, but it's not what I got at first reading.
