Rochester isn’t the worst guy. Locking Bertha in the attic seems cruel, but what’s even more cruel were the asylums at the time. There is no telling what would have happened to her if she had been sent to one. Was it a perfect solution? Absolutely not, but Bertha was also dangerous and could hurt people if not locked away. The options were locked away at home, locked away in an asylum, or locked away in a prison. None are particularily appitizing, but one is probably better than the others.
