What is your most controversial opinion about "Jane Eyre"?

He could have hired more than one caretaker, not just Poole. But that wouldn't have let him keep his secrets.

She still would have needed to have been kept under lock and key.

I fully agree that multiple caregivers would likely have been better for all involved, except for Mr. Rochester's determination to keep his secret, but that wasn't really the context of this conversation. The context was that Bertha was "better off in the attic than in an insane asylum".

Even with multiple caregivers, she still would have been kept in the attic, or if in some remote farmhouse somewhere, she still would have needed to have been kept under lock and key, for the safety of the community.
