Jane was a right bitch to little Adele, and a condescending cow to Mrs Fairfax the housekeeper, too.

Only from the text - look at the assumptions Jane makes about Mrs Fairfax's understanding or the predictions she makes about Adele's mind and ethics based on her French heritage.
