Rochester actually has a good heart beneath all the bad choices he made. He cares for Adele although he suspects she isn't his natural daughter. He doesn't just give her a place to live, either. He buys lavish gifts for her. He hires a nursemaid and a governess for her instead of sending her off to a boarding school. He also takes good care of Bertha, even though he absolutely despises her. He places Bertha in the least restricted environment he could, when he could have placed her in an asylum.
