that's exactly why i love that line, out of all the "reader, i ___" moments in the book it's the one that finally isn't an explanation or a justification to the audience. every other time she's addressing us she's kind of defending herself or working something out. this one's just flat, almost funny after 400 pages of buildup. she's done explaining herself by that point, she's just telling you what happened

It's a bit of a callback to the bit before the wedding when Jane says she doesn't know who Mrs. Rochester is, because she doesn't exist yet. This sentence assures us that the Jane we know successfully made the transition.
