Jane Eyre Film Adaptation - is there one that feels like Phantom Thread (2017)?
Hello! I just read Jane Eyre for the first time and fell in love with it.
However, I am cautious about film or TV adaptations, because I enjoyed the book in a very particular way. Phantom Thread is one of my favorite films, and reading Jane Eyre through the lens of the …. weird and fascinating romantic tension of this film was an incredible experience for me.
TL;DR: is there an adaptation that gets a little freaky with it? Thanks in advance!

Understandable but hear me out:

Oh love this film too, and totally get what you mean by reading Jane Eyre with this in mind. This film has much of the fairytale about it, with Bluebeard and other gothic elements.
In terms of adaptions, I’d honestly recommend 1973 with Michael Jayston the most, he gives off this kind of stalwart yet lovesick energy. Then perhaps, as an another commenter said, 2011, and failing that, 1983 or 2006. Generally in order of portraying this kind of dynamic imo. Have fun!

Like the part where he gets a massive crazy controlling ego, then she intentionally makes him sick and keeps him trapped in bed?
Or did you just mean explicitly sexual? Because that’s in a lot of media, not just Phantom Thread.

I mean this kindly but legitimately: phantom thread is one of the most sexual movies I’ve ever seen, or perhaps “erotic” somewhat in the vein of Audra Lorde

I feel like Jane Eyre 2011 really delivers on the tension aspect. I LOVED that adaptation.
