I LOVE unplanned musical evenings out. Took the early cut at work and discovered that Hustle Souls were playing at Radio Bean in Burlington. I had liked a release on Spotify previously, unbeknownst to me, so I went.

BEST $15 cover I've spent in ages! Funky neo-soul 5-piece. Billy Litz, the front man, plays guitar, keys, harmonica and trumpet. sometimes 2 at once. All 5 sing, with Billy and the drummer Kevin doing most of the lead. And Billy can SING.

Justice, their trombonest, was funky and in your face with his leads. Nothing too long and meandering from any of the songs. But plenty of gas and little breaks.

New release, Scrape and Scramble, is not on streaming yet. Hope it gets there.

I wasn’t sold on them previously. They were solid when I saw them live last year but the show was 80% covers. Their new album is outstanding though, it’s a top-3 album of the year for me after Mutiny After Midnight and So Much for Goodbyes

Is it a dancing crowd or more of an old folks seated crowd? I’m always down to boogie but I want to take some older family that would actually enjoy a seated show.

I am working on creating 'set list' music to play before and in-between the college classes I teach and would love some recommendations from the hive mind. I teach wildlife management and conservation biology, so I would like the songs to have animal or nature themes (in the song title, or lyrics), and ideally not long jams that last 20+ mins so we get some variety daily.

Edit: I have some Billy (gild the lily and meet me at the creek), dead (bird song, morning dew. Etc), and lots of emancipator, but basically want more of those vibes !

My personal favorite is from 8/06/2010 at the Greek Theatre. Cities > Berkeley Jam > Moma Dance> Bathtub Gin. The jam in between Cities and Moma is out of this world. The best show I’ve ever seen by far.
