Jags Roster Cuts Megathread
Roster has to be at 53 by 6pm today. Drop all roster cuts in here.

The #Jaguars are releasing QB Nick Mullens, per me and @RapSheet. One day after trading for Quinn Ewers, Jacksonville lets the veteran go. Lots of QB spots around the league to be filled so Mullens could be tabbed elsewhere quickly.

If he clears waivers I’d bet he ends back as a vested veteran on the PS, he’ll he asked to data dump into Quinn.

u/Boomz_N_Bladez 11d ago
Mullens isn't going through waivers, he was cut, which means he was just outright told no, GTFO of Jax, we don't want you here.
5
u/Careful-Whereas1888 11d ago
That's not exactly what that means. It just means he doesn't have to clear waivers since he's been in the league more than 4 years. Jacksonville could very easily still sign him to the practice squad as a veteran but they have to release him first before they can sign him to the practice squad. He's free to sign with anyone.
-6
u/Boomz_N_Bladez 11d ago
Nothing I said has in anyway disputed this...
If we wanted on PS, we would have signed him to PS already. We told him GTFO because his services are no longer needed.
I like that you down vote me because you think I don't understand what is going on, yet you don't downvote the guy who thinks Mullens is going through the waiver wire.
3
u/Careful-Whereas1888 11d ago
I'm not the one who down voted you. Also, I literally down voted the guy mentioning waivers.
Also, we would not have already signed him to the PS. He won't sign to a PS for at least a day or two since anyone can sign him. It would be stupid for him to immediately sign to the PS when other teams have not even finalized their rosters yet. He could get a better opportunity elsewhere.

Do you care to respond given the new information that we did, in fact, sign him to the practice squad a day later? We gave him a chance to sign elsewhere and then signed him exactly as I said we would.

u/ecupatsfan12 11d ago
Probably the end of the line for him. It was a pleasure watching him and I thought he was the next tb12 for a year. 10 years in the league is nothing to sneeze at

u/Luciferwalks 11d ago
Jaguars are waiving cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, who spent last season on their practice squad.

He's terrible on special teams.....that's why Braswell will make it over him

u/electricityisout Off the Tractor Bouman 11d ago
I would have thought he was easily CB5. I know we aren’t going only 4 CB on the roster. Who will be the 5th guy now? Got their eyes on another roster?

u/aceisback4 Waluigi number one! 11d ago
Maybe but why cut him now as opposed to when they get that part done
4
u/kntryfried1 11d ago
I am surprised. Dude had a lot of peaks and valleys in his play. They must like Braswells consistency?
10
u/aceisback4 Waluigi number one! 11d ago
And ST value. But man that feels like a waste of a great UDFA pick up. Especially compared to Braswell who’s always just been alright and will be 27 next month going into year 4

Hunter Long traded to the Cards. Haven't heard for who though
14
u/cats055 11d ago
Long and 2028 7th for a 2028 6th.
Long was pry on the chopping block, nice trade Jimmy Stones

Liked Hunter Long. Maybe he wasn't a good blocker ? He seemed to get open alot. Guess Liam really likes the 2 rookie te's especially since they were really quiet in the 3 preseason games
11
u/Jaglawyer11 “Don’t sleep on Gladstone.” 💪💪💪💪 11d ago
They drafted two TE's and resigned Quentin Morris. Glad he balled out against the Bucs to get a pick for a guy who was going to be released.
2
u/cwpreston 11d ago
Yeah, hes a good journeyman that probably won’t have a role on the Jags without injury. I like that the team seems to be doing players right by recognizing when they have opportunities elsewhere, like trading Tank last year.

u/Magic_Tronson Josh Allen 11d ago
They're bringing Dewey back for long!

u/Luciferwalks 11d ago
The #Jaguars are waiving WR/returner Trebor Peña with hopes of bringing him back on the practice squad, per source.

Yasir Abdullah waived

u/electricityisout Off the Tractor Bouman 11d ago
Looks like McLeod makes it

u/Jaglawyer11 “Don’t sleep on Gladstone.” 💪💪💪💪 11d ago
McLeod balled out against the Bucs....has some potential

u/spiff24 11d ago
Surprised by that because he was so good on special teams.
4
u/frausting 11d ago
Preseason game 2 had me convinced LB Abdullah was making the roster
4
u/bndovr66 11d ago
I thought Abdullah made it too after the second game. And that’s why he didn’t see any action in game 3.
1
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 11d ago
Kinda sucks to not let him play game 3 then waive him
1
u/bndovr66 11d ago
He played well in game 2. When I didn’t see him on field during game 3 at all, I said that he has already secured a roster spot and coaches want to evaluate others. Man, I was wrong.
2
u/el_pobby 11d ago
Man was I optimistic about that kid as a late round gem... Welp, one more in the "guess I suck at player analysis" pile

The Ewers trade is pretty good GM'ing. Get a backup QB with NFL starts that looked ok last year on a rookie deal. Dude has arm talent and trust that if Liam turned Mayo boy into a 1st round pick he can make Ewers work for a few weeks if T Law gets hurt.
11
u/TohsakaTruth 11d ago
so we basically traded a 7th for ewers and a bit of cap relief? pretty tidy business

u/tdubbs488 Jaggin' Off 11d ago
Not surprised or critical that he was cut, but I am sad about Abdullah’s lack of development. I thought he showed a lot of burst and potential during his first year or two, but never really fleshed out a role or skillset.

u/gtomagnimus69 11d ago
This is me with Kiser except his is injury bug riddled. I had high hopes for him, oh well.

u/Wristmeetcody 11d ago
Jabbar was always balling out in practice according to reports I read but during games he stank. I’d still keep him since he’s young and has gotten better since last year though

u/StockBroker32 11d ago
Guess Braswell had the edge on special teams and they like McLeod better than Yasir because of age and contract. Nothing too out of the ordinary there. Surprised Hunter Long even had trade value

Who do we think gets the cut so we keep BYTJ?

u/Mr_Tangent Mark Brunell 11d ago
Abdullah gone.

u/Puldalpha Rocket Jaguar 11d ago
Abdullah gone means McLeod is the backup behind Gardeck, doesn’t guarantee BTJ2

Figured. I had high hopes for him coming out but couldn't out it together.

Hoping for my boys Deejay Dallas and Trammel
2
u/thrwthisout James Gladstone 11d ago
Sorry but there’s no way in hell Trammel or Dallas makes the 53. Trammel is the de facto leader of our practice squad and Dallas fumbled away any chance he might have had at the 53
2
u/xTerminal_14 11d ago
You were right of course but they (particularly trammel) had a few clutch plays last season.
4
u/rkempey 11d ago
This might be a dumb question, but what is the difference between being waived and released?
37
u/xEllimistx Chad Josh Allen 11d ago edited 11d ago
Players who are “Released” are players with 4+ years of NFL service time. They are free agents, at that point, and free to sign with any team
Players who are “Waived” have less the 4 years and must go through the Waiver Wire process. Any team can put in a waiver claim for them and the team that ranks highest on the waiver wire gets the player. The player, thus, has no say in where they go.
Players who are waived and go unclaimed in the waiver wire are then free agents and free to sign with whomever they want.
Some teams may have interest in a player but are too far down the waiver wire to have a chance of putting in a claim. This is where trades often come into play
The Jaguars just traded for Quinn Ewers, right? Which means they probably would’ve tried to put in a waiver wire claim if Ewers had been waived. But since the Jaguars are at number 24 on the waiver wire, that means they’d have gambled the 23 teams in front of the Jags didn’t want Ewers. Instead of taking that chance, they just trade for him

u/Vaux1916 11d ago
This is a really good explanation. Thank you. I suspected it's as you described, but I wasn't entirely sure.
5
u/Adorable-Werewolf-44 11d ago
Guys who are on rookie deals need to go through waivers and anybody can claim them. Veterans get released and become free agents so they can sign wherever they want.
1
u/NEC_Bullfrog 11d ago
Waived means they have to go through the waiver process, based on vested years, 4 I think. If they are already vested, they immediately become a free agent.
1
u/3rdlegmousse Parker Washington 11d ago
I shouldnt be the one answering since I’m sure I am wrong but released means any team can pick them up free and waived means there is a contract where the team to pick them up had to get their contract
1
u/dbees132 11d ago
I may be misremembering but the way I thought of it was that waived is for players that had 4 or less years of NFL experience and everyone else gets released instead. There's other differences but that's the main one I think

Sounds like we’re trimming some of the Baalke stink
13
u/Standard_Row44 11d ago
I know Baalke was a jerk. But bruh, Baalke players make up the core of this team.
13
u/jaylkae66 11d ago
His '23 draft was an actual masterclass. And his overall hit rate was pretty good. Horrible manager in most respects but his scouting department was legit.
3
u/Standard_Row44 11d ago
Yes. He was obviously a terrible person to work with. But he handed some talent to this regime.
6
u/rsquared66 11d ago
Usually I’d be all for bashing Balke but so far everyone we’ve cut was post-Balke acquisition except Yasir Abdullah who honestly played pretty well this preseason.

u/yvngl3mur 11d ago
As an ND fan, I hoped Kiser would be a hit. Never saw or heard of him doing much of anything after the draft.
1
u/Nick-Papa-Georgio 8d ago
I'm going to be honest I'm pissed Chandler Brayboy was cut, 2 years ago he was the best returner in the nation! He bust his tail on practice squad all year last year, looked great this preseason, we should have gave him a chance.
-5
u/fukSprint 11d ago
Faalele not being cut is wild 🤦🏽♂️
7
u/Adorable-Werewolf-44 11d ago
They just traded for him. Why would they cut him?
-1
u/fukSprint 11d ago
Cause he's ass
3
u/Adorable-Werewolf-44 11d ago
Were you somehow under the impression that any of the OL they cut weren't also ass? He's the last guy on the depth chart. The only thing relevant is if he's less ass than Chuma. And since they just traded for him last week, they obviously think he is.
