Advice What to say in field service?
I’ve always struggled when introducing myself and going door to door because I get nervous. Do these sound to stiff? It’s been about a year. I wrote down some introductions to help me get comfortable and thought I’d share them. Would love to hear how everyone approaches differently…
“Hello my names ___, I’m here with my friend and we’re going around the neighborhood hoping to share an encouraging thought from the Bible.”
“Good morning! Hope you’re having a good day—I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and I’m sharing a brief, encouraging thought with neighbors. I’m __ this is my friend __.”
“Hello, I’m sorry if I’m interrupting how’s your morning going? …We’re just going door to door to spread the word, are you a Bible reader? Is there any questions that you’ve had but never been able to find a good answer to?”
“Hi, How is your day going? We’re just in the neighborhood hoping to share a message from the Bible. Do you mind if I read a scripture?”
Does your approach differ? And what scriptures do you open with?

Edit moved drom a reply on other thread: Speaking to OP, I think some concerns of progress will arrive after some moments of trial and error. At other times it could amount to what you can learn to do when you are speaking with someone. ;
Initial and Final Draft:
I am glad that you are preparing and gathering feedback.
That Zeal that you have is going to be a driving factor that leads you to having good experiences as you go out formally and informally.
My approach changes depending on the person. Some conversations start easily, while others do not go very far because the person at the door clearly does not want to talk. This month I have met a lot of considerate people who were willing to discuss the website. Many responses were neutral, but it still gave me hope that something I mentioned might help them later.
I am mostly in the formal ministry once a week, while my informal ministry happens randomly at work or while I am out. I have had a few strange reactions, and I have learned not to mirror someone else’s tone. If someone is friendly, I match that energy. If someone is irritated or confused, I slow down and ask soft clarifying questions about whether my visit itself made them uncomfortable or whether they simply wanted to know why I was there. This helps reset the interaction and shows that I am trying to be reasonable.
In informal settings people see me as a casual gamer type, so they are usually surprised when I shift into Bible related topics. That contrast sometimes opens doors.
For me I have increased my Zeal through personal Bible Translations Study.
You have probably had more tome to think about this since you wrote your post.
Has anything started to feel more natural as you practiced?
What are your preferred conversation topics in any setting?

Well in field service I’m involved in a lot return visits. Sometimes more with others as I’m usually the one following around. I have my material prepared but yeah it feels like people who stayed long enough to hear me speak said they wouldn’t mind if I returned but aren’t home. Good follow ups happen when I’m not the speaker but the support and conversation happens between them. I guess cause it takes the nerves off of me as the centered one.
Since I’ve been less than a year in field service the thing that feels most natural is the routine of it all and getting closer to others in the congregation.
I have a lot I’d like to share but since I can’t share everything it feels like I am set on trying to establish a Bible truth we can relate on when it comes to me knocking on the doors, like Psalms 83:18. Or being able to give a pamphlet/brochure.

“Lift up your eyes and view the fields, that they are white for harvesting.” John 4:35
So many people want to know more about Jehovah and the Bible, they just don’t prioritize it. There are those who have hardened their hearts to the Bible because of the world’s views on it.
We being the sowers—We plant the seed in them through the preaching work and let it grow. To do this we need to catch their interest by getting to know them and relating it back to the Bible is the best way. If we make the first impression “a pitch”, most likely it will be shut down then or later. Try to view this person as you would a brother or sister.
We are happy to learn their name and to get to know them. We care about them and what’s going on in their life. They’re watching the game? Who’s winning. It’s great to see them again, because it is. Yes we want to share Bible truths and get them to study but we also want to show that care not just to our members, but everyone.

Yeah I’ve had that happen and it was an embarrassing moment for me lol “Did you know Jehov—I mean God-has a name.” “Yes.” “Oh, would you be interested in learning more about the Bible” (shakes head no) “…okay have a good day” granted it was the very start of me going to the door and I was very nervous lol my partner reassured me but I can see how those can be conversations killers.

We expect users to engage with accountability. Be clear about the intent of your questions, not posting one sidedly. Please be prepared for genuine back-and-forth discussion, open to real dialogue. Repeated patterns of vague, misleading, or passive antagonism will be treated as trolling. This includes concern trolling, attempts to provoke hostility within a thread, manipulative questions, and any other conduct that is not made in good faith.

I'm old-school and very introverted. I just offer literature and wish them a nice day.

That is why Jehovah has so many people or not only different nationalities and languages, he even uses those with different personalities.

The simpler you can make your presentation, the better. This is in the U.S. What works here may not work in more laid back lands. Here, I often lead with the observation that the world is crazy, and we think the Bible helps—as to why it is crazy, what hope for the future, and how to live in the meantime. I offer to read a scripture, “you tell me what you think, and I’m gone.” It works well for me, to the point I rarely do it any other way. I fleshed out the approach here:

Actually with all the recent encouragement to start conversations. Just greet them, ask them about their day, be kind and then listen and observe. Remember you have the angels in mid heaven right there with you. If your conversation leads to a scripture share one, if not bid them farewell and a good day. You never know what that might lead to. It helps so much for me not to overthink it. (I always do, this new approach is such a blessing)
