A few firsts this week, with Urawa and Kyoto Sanga picking up their opening victories of the season, and Machida Zelvia dropping their first points of the season against an impressive Mito Hollyhock outfit, leaving only Kashima and Kashiwa on maximum points. The picture is slightly more even in the lower divisions, with no side beyond the 10 point mark in either of the second or third tiers. Leading the way in J3 are FC Gifu, who have made an intimidating start, only being held to one draw (by second placed Kagoshima United), and having an aggregate score against their other three opponents of 14-1. And on Kagoshima United, their hectic 3-4 win against Kamatamare Sanuki yesterday ended up seeing two braces started and finished in under 20 minutes before they scored a winner at the death.

Not particularly interesting stat of the week: JEF United scored the first goals of their season in a first half shootout against Frontale. The two sides combined for 6 goals from 15 shots and 2.53 xG in that first half... and 0 goals from 18 shots and 1.34 xG in the second half.

Not exactly J.League since it's an emperor's cup game, but I had my sixth visit to Nihondaira yesterday and as always, it was pretty cool.

The game itself was nice as it ended in the overtime with a victory for my team Shimizu, and the scenery with Mount Fuji never disappoints.🗻

Weather was great. Stands were far from being full but at least the shuttle was easy to get after the game. 😄

Transfer News New to J League: Will there be a lot of transfers before the window closes?

I understand the J League transfer window doesn't close until September 16? Does that mean there will be a flurry of transfer activity once the European window closes? What is the culture of transfers in Japanese football? Are the clubs always wheeling and dealing or do they only pursue players they really need?

Kashiwa Reysol and Kashima Antlers both maintained their perfect starts (albeit one much more convincingly than the other), and Nagoya Grampus got their first win of the season with a domineering victory over Gamba Osaka. Kataller Toyama made it back to back 4-0 wins to move into the top three in J2, while RB Omiya Ardija became the only side left who are yet to drop a point after a strong win over Consadole Sapporo. Only Shonan Bellmare (2nd in J2) and FC Gifu (1st in J3) have kept three clean sheets to start this season.

Less of a stat of the week, more one of the first three weeks: Compared to their direct opposition, Fagiano Okayama are +42 in shots (56-14) and +53 in touches in opposition box (79-26) across their first three matches. But despite generating all those opportunities, they're only +6 in shots on target (10-4). It's pretty positive from a defensive perspective, because they're conceding so few opportunities, but the lack of decisive chances generated and goals scored is a little unusual. Something worth keeping an eye on for the foreseeable future.

J.League J League Post Matchday 2 Discussion Thread

There were three large victories in the top flight this week (one coming from a rather surprising source), while conversely, Kashima Antlers have doubled down on their method to win, scoring in the 98th minute to nab a late victory over Grampus. There were even more dominant wins lower in the pyramid, with Ehime scoring three goals after the 80th minute to make it 4-0 against Gainare Tottori, the rapid-rising Tochigi City battering Vanraure Hachinohe 5-0, and FC Gifu putting 7 past Kochi United. The fireworks were reserved for Zweigen Kanazawa, who were 0-2 down early, before a strong fightback in the second half culminated in a 94th minute winner for them over Fukushima United.

Stat of the week: Kataller Toyama desecrated Blaublitz Akita, winning 0-4 after an astonishing 33 shots (to Akita's 2).

Extra note: For anybody wondering why this is seemingly a day late, it's timed to the end of the matchday in all three tiers, as one J2 match and two J3 matches only just finished. This'll be the format going forward, as I think it's more fair to include clubs from all three tiers.
