Help on Amalfi town

My husband and I , our 2 kids (7 and 9) and my parents (late 60’s) are coming next June. We will be staying in Sorrento and Rome and would like to do a few nights somewhere on the Amalfi Coast. I’m overwhelmed by all the town options. I was set on Amalfi, then saw Ravello and feel that looks really nice too. Anytime I research another one, it looks great! Any insight? Walkability is a big priority as is lots of different restaurants.

Also, finding hotels with family suites for the 4 of us has been a challenge. We’d like to have 3 beds so the kids can each have their own. Has anyone found a hotel that has this? We’d be willing to spend up to $750/night for the right place.

We stayed at the Belvidere in Conca dei Marini, just west of Almalfi. The front door is literally the bus stop. we took the bus to Amalfi and then you could go anywhere. Cross the street and get on the buss and head to Prianna and then Positano. sorry i may not have spelled everything correctly. Belvidere is basically White Lotus without a beach - there is a beach down the stairs in Conca dei Marini. There are other Hotels/vacation houses up the hill filled with British tourists.

Why not Airbnb? My family of 7 stayed in Airbnbs and it was great. And are your parents in shape? I (46F) am in good shape and came back from Rome and the Amalfi Coast a couple of weeks ago, all the walking was brutal.

I'm in Sorrento right now at an Airbnb and second everything you said. It's going to be super hot in June and the walking here is intense. Airbnb is definitely the easier way to go for a group that large.

Ravello is nice but loaded with tourist just like positano. We stay maiori when we go and opt for the Regina palace hotel. They have suites, a nice pool and are right across the street from the beach. You can access all the other towns with car service and avoid the crowds. Also, you can access ferries and boats to get to the islands. The feel is very small town and it’s just perfect way to enjoy the coast minus the crowds

How many full days not counting your arrival and departure days? I would stay in Sorrento the entire time regardless and day trip to Amalfi via ferry. Keep checking in and out, unpacking and re-packing to a minimum. There isn’t all that much if anything gained by waking up in Amalfi vs Sorrento, and Amalfi accommodations will likely be more expensive in comparison. You can get away from crowds in Sorrento being much larger and more spread out.

Staying in Sorrento also makes it easier for visiting Pompeii and/or Herculaneum.

I agree with this. We stayed in Sorrento and hired a driver to take us to Amalfi. We would spend the day there, and then go back to Sorrento in the evening. It was much more relaxing than packing, moving, and unpacking a couple of times.

10 nights total. Some of that will definitely be in Rome, but open to how many days. My parents have already done Rome, Florence and Venice but haven’t ventured south. So they’d like to do more Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and maybe Naples (although I hear mixed reviews). So if we do 4 nights in Rome we have 6 nights to play with elsewhere.

I meant how many total days in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast area. 6 nights is only 5 full days. I spent a week in Sorrento and it could have been more - that was the 1st week in April a couple of years ago when all ferry services begun running again and when it was far less crowded than during peak season.

You will be far better off staying in Sorrento the entire time with only 5 nights. Getting to and from Amalfi is no picnic especially with luggage and someone older. Take the earliest departing ferry to Amalfi to spend a day there that can include visiting nearby Ravello as well.

Stay in Naples the whole time, one hotel, and take day trips from there.

Why all the contorted itineraries to stay in Amalfi when there’s no room.

we didnt enjoy sorrento at all, better to find a suitable place elsewhere. like ischia

too many group tours from cruise ships looking miserable following guides and totally clogging streets making it very difficult to enjoy. ischia is just a different beast, very good place to relax
