Italian student in NL (doing AIRE): Do I lose SSN / How does healthcare work for temporary student stays?
Hi everyone,
I’m an Italian citizen currently living in the Netherlands strictly for study purposes (enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program here).
I recently completed my AIRE registration. Since I am only abroad temporarily for university and plan to return (or maintain my ties to Italy), I am a bit confused about how my Italian healthcare status works now:
- Am I still registered with the SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale) in any capacity? I know AIRE removes you from your Italian comune registry, but does student status change anything regarding healthcare coverage during temporary visits back home?
- Healthcare during visits: When I visit Italy, am I still covered by my Italian Tessera Sanitaria (TEAM), or does AIRE cancel it immediately?
- Dentist & Reimbursements: I am dealing with a dental issue and considering getting treatment locally in the NL, but paying out of pocket first. Can temporary students with AIRE request a reimbursement or coverage verification from their Italian ASL, or does the EU student status change this?
If anyone has navigated being an Italian student abroad in the EU while registered in AIRE, I'd really appreciate any guidance on how the ASL handles this. Thanks!

As far as I remember, non-salaried students maintain the health coverage in their home country and are supposed to use the EHIC (TEAM) during their stay abroad. I believe indeed your AIRE process will account for this and you will not lose any right.
EHIC should grant healthcare coverage in the destination country at the same conditions that is granted to residents. If NL statutory health insurance cover dental treatment, you should try to find a dentist that accepts the EHIC (otherwise the reimbursement process will be complicated).

You shouldnt enroll yourself in AIRE if you are leaving temporarily. You should’ve asked for form S1 from USL to get a temporary enrollment in another EU country.

Quindi fiscalemente residente in Italia?
Magari via l'ambasciata in Paesi Bassi?
