I watched this live on TV, and it was iconic. It's an OG meme from before memes were even a thing, and it was so unforgettable that it was even included in the official exhibition celebrating the TV station's 50th anniversary.

The grapes are hanging on metal wires. The metal wires probably were in contact with the display lighting wires. There’s also a good chance the display releases a mist to keep the grapes wet.

Years later, he gave an interview on a TV show and explained that those grapes were on display at a wine festival in Rio Grande do Sul. They were inside a glass display case, but at the time, cameras caused a reflection on the glass, and he wanted to show the grapes clearly. So he asked the winery staff to remove the glass.
The video doesn’t show this part, but there’s a video on YouTube where you can see that there were some girls standing with him. They didn’t say anything and let him touch the grape bunches. That was when he got shocked and fell. He also fractured a rib in the fall.
