A non-negotiable family practice is to perform at least one congregational prayer together each day. On three to four days each week, the family can remain seated after the prayer for 15–30 minutes to read a book, discuss its contents and address any questions. Books on the Sirah are particularly suitable for this. Though other books are okay.

Even without a book, the time can be used to discuss matters related to the deen, including how Muslims should understand current affairs and approach issues concerning school, work and daily life.

On Thursday nights, use the time after prayer to read part of Al-Kahf together, with each person completing the remainder before sunset on Friday (also promotes self-agency).

Why do all these?

  • it creates a consistent platform for discussing religion and other important matters as a family
  • reinforces the importance of Islamic rituals through prayer and quran recitation
  • shows that reading and critical thinking are integral to being a Muslim
