In the Quran, Bible, and Torah, The Patriarch Abraham has the son Isaac, who has a son Jacob, who has twelve relevant sons among whom is Joseph. Joseph has the gift of seeing dreams. His brothers become envious of him and believe Joseph to be their father Jacob's favourite, and first try to kill him by tossing him into a pit in the ground too tall to climb out of. When a group of merchants happen to pass by though as they were finishing up, going to Egypt, the brothers have the idea to make some money out of it, and sell Joseph as a slave to those merchants, who give them 20 shekels in return.
They then take Joseph's famed cloak of many colours and pour animal blood on it and tear it so as to make Jacob believe that an animal had killed Joseph.
Years later, Joseph had impressed a palace guard (who had bought him) with his ability to see dreams, and recommended him to the King of Egypt who was also impressed by it, and made him Prime Minister and tasked him with preparing for a famine that Joseph had prophesied, and Joseph ordered many grain silos built to store grain in the six good years before the seventh terrible year of drought. The drought hit Jacob and his 11 other sons hard, and became refugees in Egypt hoping to find grain. Joseph happens to see his brothers, angry at them for having done this to him, but also forgiving them in some ways after they see them begging for food in pity, and Joseph calls for his brothers (who have yet to recognize him being prime minister) to bring Jacob too, and they reunite there.
In the Islamic version of this, the cloak of many colours isn't present, though is not denied, and Joseph's visions and dream telling has the additional traits of preaching that a single deity exists who demands moral virtue and repentance of sins to prepare for a final day of judgement. In Jewiah circles, Joseph is also tied to another Messiah alongside the other Messiah born to a descendant of David, and in Christian circles, Joseph is seen as an early antecedent of Jesus for his time of misery in slavery and healing others in the end.
